Engineering Transfer Institutions

While generic academic plans can be found under the Highline Pathway Mapper website for each branch of engineering, it is not recommended that you self-advise! Different transfer institutions have different course requirements both for technical and non-technical classes. Faculty at Highline meet with transfer institutions across the state twice a year to maintain our transfer pathways and we are here to pass that information on to you!

The first step in earning your Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a transfer institution, is to meet with a faculty advisor here at a Highline who can help you plan the pathway for your future transfer.

How to figure it out: Take introductory survey courses, talk to faculty, and explore different career paths. You don't need to commit on day one—we can help you explore your interests while completing core requirements that apply toward multiple pathways.
What kind of jobs can you get with a Physics degree?
Your career paths:A physics degree builds strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Graduates go on to careers in research, data analysis, software development, aerospace, education, and technical consulting, or move on to graduate programs.
What kind of jobs can you get with an Engineering degree?
Your career paths: Engineering leads directly to design, development, and problem-solving roles across industries like aerospace, civil infrastructure, manufacturing, electronics, renewable energy, and bio-tech.
Should you choose Physics or Engineering?
How to decide: If you love asking why physical systems work the way they do and want to focus on fundamental theories and principles, Physics is a great fit. If you prefer applying those principles to design, build, and test real-world devices or systems, Engineering is likely your path.
Are Computer Science and Computer Engineering the same?
The difference: Computer Science focuses heavily on software, algorithms, and computing theory. Computer Engineering blends hardware design with software systems. You do not strictly need a full engineering degree to work as a software engineer—many paths lead there, including Computer Science and related technical fields.
How do you pick the right branch of engineering?
Finding your discipline: Think about what problems you want to solve. Interested in physical structures? Consider Civil. Focused on electronics and circuit design? Look into Electrical. Love machinery and thermal systems? Mechanical might be for you.

Which classes should you register for first?
Your starting line: Placement in math is usually the main key for engineering and physics coursework. Your advisor will help map out your first term based on your current math placement so you build a solid foundation right away.
How do you connect with a Physics or Engineering advisor?
Getting guided advice: You can reach out directly to faculty advisors in the department via email or schedule an appointment through Academic Advising.
What support services are available to help you succeed at Highline?
Resources for you: You have access to free tutoring (Math Resource Center, Writing Center), peer mentoring, faculty office hours, financial counseling, and accessibility accommodations.

 

Graduation & Transferring

Which 4-year universities can you transfer to?
Your transfer options: Highline credits transfer to major universities across Washington and beyond. It is important to check with the school you wish to transfer to to make sure they offer what you want. Top transfer-to institutions include: University of Washington,  Washington State University and Seattle University.
What GPA do you need to graduate and get accepted to a 4-year program?
Grade expectations: Highline requires a minimum GPA (typically 2.0) to earn your associate degree, but competitive transfer programs (especially in engineering) often look for higher GPAs in core math and science coursework.
Do you need to complete an Associate in Science (AS) degree before transferring?
Degree planning: While not always mandatory, completing an AS degree ensures your credits block-transfer efficiently, saving you time and tuition money after you move to a university.
How long will it take to finish your credits and transfer?
Your timeline: Most full-time students take about two years (6 quarters) to complete their transfer degree, though your exact timeline depends on your starting math level and how many credits you take each quarter.
