Transfer Student English Placement
English Placement Options for Transfer Students
These options are for students who completed a U.S. high school degree within the last 10 years and have taken college-level courses at another community or technical college or a four-year college or university in the state of Washington.
If you have taken credited English courses (pre-college or college level) at another college, the entry advisor will help you determine the best course to start with here Highline.
If you didn’t take English courses but took an English placement test at another college within the last 2 years, we will honor your course placement from that college (with documentation). Follow the instructions below to request this, which is called placement reciprocity (PLR). Submit placement scores using an option below.

Students have three options, based on assessment and guidance from their entry advisor.
Students NOT eligible for English 101 Placement
Students have one option, followed by two options, based on assessment and guidance from the entry advisor.

Credit versus Pre-College Courses
- English 101 and English 101 Plus Support count for the college degree.
- English 097 and English 099 are pre-college courses. Financial aid can be used for these courses, but they do not count toward the degree requirements.
