World Languages Courses

The World Languages department at Highline College offers a variety of classes. All World Languages classes fulfill the Humanities Area 1 distribution area. World Languages classes may also be taken as elective credits. Many of our courses are offered in alternate modalities, including online, virtual (Zoom) and in-person.

Please refer to the online quarterly course schedule for specific course and modality schedules.A complete list of classes we offer is available in the
Highline Catalog.

The Ampersand (&) Difference

  • SPAN& (Common Course Numbering): In Washington, some courses have the same number across all community and technical colleges. These are “common courses.” If a course from a different college has the same number and subject as Highline’s, and an ampersand (&), then they’re considered the same course. They are designed to transfer seamlessly between these schools. Examples at Highline include SPAN& 121- Spanish I or SPAN& 122 Spanish II.

  • SPAN (Highline-Specific): Courses without the ampersand are unique to Highline College. While they still transfer to four-year universities (often under a Direct Transfer Agreement), they don't have a pre-matched course at every other community or technical college. Examples include SPAN 231 - Spanish for Heritage Speakers I or SPAN 291 - Special Studies.
