Course Instruction Modes

Are you unsure whether a class takes place at the college, on Zoom, or uses Canvas?

Starting in Summer 2024, ctcLink will display course instruction mode options differently in class schedules, indicating whether courses are in-person, online, or require Canvas. When viewing the class schedule, look for the Instruction Mode column, which now includes new, more precise names for each type of class mode.

What is a course mode?

The way a class is conducted is called its course mode. This determines how students interact with instructors and engage with content during the learning experience. Different course modes offer varied ways of participating in the class.

What is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous classes?

Synchronous classes require you to participate in real time, which means you’ll need to be present at specific times. Asynchronous classes offer more flexibility. You can access the course materials and complete assignments at flexible times.  There are no required meeting times or in-person meetings, but you do have to meet regular deadlines.

What is Canvas?

Canvas is a web-based learning management system. It is used by instructors and students to access and manage online course learning materials.
