Communication Studies and Journalism Department
Do you envision a life that involves working and living with other people? Improving your ability to understand, lead, and influence others will significantly improve the quality of your professional, civic, and personal life?
Employers are looking for graduates with strong communication skills, critical thinking ability, problem-solving, teamwork and collaboration skills, and cultural responsiveness. Communications and journalism coursework at Highline prepares students to be mindful citizens in our increasingly connected world through the promotion of ethical, responsible, and effective communication.
Our courses offer students historical, theoretical, and practical knowledge of communication that will be useful in their personal lives, their professional lives, and within their involvement within their communities. While Highline doesn't offer a degree in Communication Studies, the Associate in Arts DTA degree can help you transfer to a 4-year program.

Communication Studies examines how humans interact through symbols—verbal, nonverbal, and visual—while journalism applies this understanding by gathering information, analyzing and editing it for a mass audience, and delivering it through various media platforms.

The Communication Studies and Journalism Department also connects you to exciting opportunities to gain hands-on skills outside of class. Practice and even apply to become a tutor for the Public Speaking Center. Participate in Highline’s weekly student newspaper, The Thunderword. Or get involved with 106.5 KQWZ LP-FM radio.
