While there were no official UFO sightings, more than 240 astronauts, space explorers, and galactic supporters gathered at Highline College on Nov. 22 for the Highline College Foundation annual Thunderbirds Soar event.

This year’s theme, honored former Highline College President Dr. Ed Command, whose generous estate donation this past year is the largest in the college’s 64-year history. His legacy will support students for decades to come at Highline College, home to one of the most diverse and underserved student populations in the state.

Dr. Command’s journey began in a two-room schoolhouse in Elma, Washington. Before joining Highline, he taught science and math in the Highline School District. Over his 30-year career at Highline, he served as registrar, administrative assistant to the president, vice president, and ultimately, president. He was known for his integrity, his dedication to faculty, and his unwavering support of students.

Executive Director of the Foundation and Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Josh Gerstman, shared that the purpose of the event “is to provide an opportunity for our supporters from throughout the local community and the campus community to come together to celebrate the great work happening at Highline, support our students through financial contributions, and connect with familiar faces and new friends.”

The evening featured powerful words from students, staff, faculty, community members, and civic leaders—sprinkled with a lighthearted race to “soar” for dessert, live music, singing and dancing, and fantastic food from Jumpin’ Jambalaya. The celestial celebration was filled with starry wonder and high hopes for the future.

While donations are still coming in, net proceeds have already surpassed $111,000, all of which will support Highline College students in pursuing and achieving their educational goals. With the growing food crisis in recent months, many attendees also contributed directly to the campus food pantry, free meal initiatives, and local partner food banks.

Thank you to our incredible guests, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors for making “A Highline Experience from Mission Command” a truly stellar success!
