On May 26, Building 8 came alive with vibrant cultural booths, traditional performances, energetic music, and a cultural fashion show at Highline College’s annual Global Fest.
Members of Highline’s community shared their culture and traditions through information boards, maps, photos and more. This year’s event featured 20 countries, including Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Venezuela, Kenya and Lithuania.
According to the Global Student Ambassadors (GSA), who organized the event, “Learning about other cultures at Global Fest can be an enlightening experience for students, and one in which they reach a greater understanding of each other.”
Music, dance, singing, and the fashion show were among the highlights of the action-packed day. Seven performances lit up the stage, and students shared their national attire and cultural identity in the fashion show. Delicious food from around the world was available to sample, and attendees had the opportunity to make meaningful connections with global students.
A returning performer to this year’s Global Fest was Grupo Cultural Donaji, who last year got the audience up and dancing. Their performance involved multiple generations—from children to elders—sharing their culture in a display of beautiful outfits.
Event partners included Highline's International Student Programs (ISP), the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS), and Jumpin’ Jambalaya, which supplied the food.
Global Fest is organized by the GSA, a group of Highline students who plan programs and events throughout the year to connect the global community on campus. These students are dedicated to creating fun, educational, and memorable moments for the Highline community outside of the classroom.
