Free Events During Disability Awareness Month
It has been 25 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) passed. During October 2015, Highline College will celebrate the anniversary during Disability Awareness Month with campus events centered on the theme “Moving Beyond Inclusion.”
Moving Beyond Inclusion asks us all to consider how we can help create a future where all doors are open to equal opportunity, full participation and integration. What critical role do you play in enforcing the ADA? What does the ADA mean to you?
All events are free and open to the public and will be held on the college’s main campus.

True Inclusion

Adopted in 1994 from an orphanage in Latvia and later diagnosed with autism, Ivanova Smith always felt different. Now a college graduate, historian, activist, and educator, Smith will examine the deep stigmas experienced by people with intellectual/developmental disabilities today and the impact on true inclusion.

Beating the Odds: My Journey to Higher Education

Devon Adelman always knew she wanted to attend college. As a student with Down syndrome, many people questioned her ability to achieve this dream. Adelman believed in her capabilities and knew that she needed higher education to accomplish her goal of working in marine biology. Now a Highline student, Adelman will speak about her path to college and her recent leadership and advocacy efforts at the White House and the United Nations. Refreshments will be served.
