“Homeless to Harvard”

How does a homeless Bronx teenager with two drug-addicted parents end up graduating at the top of her high-school class and getting a scholarship to Harvard? For Liz Murray, it was the only way out of a downward spiral that had swept her family into a hellish existence — and found the teen scrounging for food and sleeping on the subway.

Based on the true story of Liz Murray (Birch), "Homeless to Harvard" tells the moving story of a young woman raised in severe poverty by loving, yet drug-addicted parents. By the age of 15, Liz's life was in a downward spiral -- she was alone and living on the streets. Profoundly affected by her mother's AIDS-related death, Liz is forced to look at her future and make some significant changes. She turns her life around by getting off the streets and going back to high school. After earning her diploma in just two years, Liz wins a New York Times scholarship for needy students, enabling her to attend Harvard University.

The pre-conference event will include a viewing of this inspirational movie followed by discussion.  Popcorn and drinks will be provided.  This event is free of charge.  Please mark your registration form if you plan to attend so that we can provide adequate seating and food.
