What is on the COMPASS Math test?

The Diagnostic Test: This is for students who have never taken algebra and wish to take Math 61.

It covers:

  • Operations with integers
  • Operations with decimals
  • Operations with fractions
  • Exponents
  • Ratios and proportions
  • Percentages
  • Averages

The Pre-algebra Test: measures basic numerical skills and basic problem solving skills.  This test is for students who have never taken algebra and who wish to take Math 061, Math 081, Math 082, Math 085, Math 091.

There are arithmetic questions on:

  • Operations with whole numbers, decimals and fractions
  • Comparison of fractions and decimals
  • Ratio, proportion and percentages
  • Conversion of fractions, decimals and percents
  • Order of operations of real numbers
  • Estimations skills
  • Number theory
  • Counting problems and simple probability

Pre-algebra questions on:

  • Prime and composite numbers
  • Complex fractions
  • Signed numbers
  • Absolute values
The Algebra Test: measures skills commonly learned in a first year high school algebra course.  This test is for students who have had some algebra and wish to take Math 097, Math 098, Math 106, Math 107, Math 111, or Math 115.

Questions included:

  • Substituting values into algebraic expressions
  • Setting up equations for given situations
  • Operations with polynomials
  • Solving polynomial equations by factoring
  • Formula manipulation and field axioms
  • Solutions of linear equations in one variable
  • Exponents
  • Rational expressions 
  • Systems of linear equations in two variables
  • Slope of a line
  • Quadratic formulas
  • Absolute value equations and inequalities

The College Algebra Test: is designed to assess skills commonly acquired in a pre-calculus, math analysis, or functions course.  This test is for students who have had algebra and wish to take Math 112, or Math 116.  

The content areas tested include:

  • Exponential functions
  • Factorials
  • Operations with complex numbers
  • Composition of functions
  • Matrices
  • Systems of linear equations in three or more variables
  • Logic and proof techniques
  • Roots of polynomials

The Trigonometry Test: is designed to assess skills and understanding of trigonometric concepts and their application in problem solving.  This test is for students who wish to take Math 124.

Questions include:

  • Trigonometric functions and identities
  • Right-triangle trigonometry
  • Trigonometric equations and inequalities
  • Graphs of trigonometric functions
  • Special angles (multiples of 30 and 45 degrees)
  • Polar coordinates
