Applying to universities

The sooner you begin exploring your higher education opportunities, the better. HCC offers many resources to help you navigate transfer information, choose a major, plan prerequisites and more! The Transfer Center has developed a timeline to guide you. As a Running Start student, there are details about going to a university that you should know.

Is there an application deadline?

Make sure you check with each school's deadlines! Running start students generally apply as freshmen.  The freshman application may be different from the transfer application deadlines.  Please be sure to fill out the appropriate application form, submit the required application materials and meet the correct deadlines.  Even though you are completing college credits and even if you earn your associate degree!

This means you need to complete the same steps as a student who took all their classes at the high school (like taking the ACT or SAT).

Also, be sure to note if there is a separate application for your major.  The deadline for general admission and the deadline for your major may not be the same.

Will my credits transfer?

It is always up to the school you transfer credits to. If you earn an AA or AS degree, your credits are designed to transfer as a “package” within public and most private Washington State universities, as a result of the Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA). However, if you transfer with less than an AA or AS degree, a school will transfer your credit course by course, meaning some classes may transfer and some may not. By visiting our Transfer Center, you can access equivalency guides to some of our state institutions to see how your specific classes will transfer.

Will an out-of-state university accept my credits?

It is always up to the college you want to attend as to how your credits may transfer. Running Start is a program unique to Washington. Many schools outside of Washington may be unfamiliar with it. It is strongly recommended that you contact the out-of-state schools you are considering to see how/if credit earned through Running Start may be transferred. Also, keep in mind that HCC does not have a Direct Transfer Agreement with these institutions. Because our Transfer Center is specifically designed to provide information on Washington colleges, you will need to research out-of-state institutions. The Web is one of the easiest and quickest ways to do this.
