Student Employment

On Campus Employment

F-1 students are generally permitted to work part-time on the campus of the school that issued their currently valid I-20. Students must be attending and maintaining status. No special employment authorization is required. Hours are limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session; can be full time during official school breaks.

There are more students who seek work than there are open jobs at Highline Community College. To find a job, students should be persistent. Campus offices usually hire students with strong English skills and some prior work experience.  The ISP office does not maintain any lists of open jobs on campus.

Process:

1) Create a resume or brief statement of experience. Our Career Services office can help.

2) Go to the office or location you are interested in and ask if there are any jobs are available. If there are none at the current time, ask when they might be expecting to hire next. Turn in your resume.

Please note: The employer may ask if you are a “work study” student. “Work Study” is a special financial aid program for US Citizens and Permanent Residents. International students are not eligible for work study positions.

Off Campus Employment
F-1 students are not permitted to work off campus.  Students who are caught working off campus risk deportation by U.S. immigration.  In the rare case of severe economic hardship, some students are allowed to work off campus by special permission.
