Class Registration
New Students
If you are a new student to Highline Community College, you need to check in with the International Student Programs office. Then you need to follow these steps:
1) Take the COMPASS placement tests. These tests are not pass/fail, but rather level tests. Your scores will help your advisors to know which classes are best for you.
2) Begin looking at the course quarterly (the list of courses) to familiarize yourself with the courses available.
3) Bring your placement scores to an International Student Advisor. Advance appointments are recommended but not required.
4) Your advisor will review the requirements of your chosen course of study, and recommend your first quarter choice of classes. Although we can make recommendations, the final choice is up to you!
5) All new Highline Community College international students are required to take SSER 100—College Survival. It is one credit and covers topics such as Highline processes and culture shock.
6) Even after the advisor registers your classes, your seat is not guaranteed until you pay your tuition. The advisor can notify you about deadlines.
Returning Students
We've changed the way international students at Highline register for
classes. Now, students have the ability to register themselves
over the web! If you did not attend our training sessions and you
need help, please come to the ISP office and we'll get you started. *Reminder*
International students must enroll in at least 12 credits each quarter. Exceptions include vacation quarter and graduation quarter, but require prior approval from ISP.
Online registration and hints
- Change your PIN number to something easy for you to remember but
difficult for others to guess. This will ensure the privacy of
your personal information.
- The error message "Bad Address" means that mail sent to your
address was returned to the college as undeliverable. Please
go to the "Address Change" link on the Web Registration page to
correct your address. Also be sure that ISP has your correct
address for the SEVIS system.
- The error message "Item Number Not Valid" usually means that you
did not select the correct quarter on the main registration page.
Go back and select the correct quarter, or double check to be sure
you are using the correct quarterly booklet.
- The error message "Entry Code Required" means that according to
test scores, you do not yet qualify to enroll in the class.
Double check the prerequisites for the class. If you feel you
do meet the prerequisite, bring the documentation to an advisor and
request the code.
- Variable credit classes allow you to choose the number of
credits you will earn for the course work, usually from 1 to 5.
Enter the item number of the class, and a dialog box saying "Change
credits" will appear, with the number 5 in the box. Type in
the number of credits you wish to take.
- 18 credits is the maximum credit load per quarter. If you
wish to take more than 18 credits, register for the majority of your
classes online, then complete the add/drop form for the remaining
class. An advisor will review your record and register the
class for you. If you have below a 3.2 GPA in previous
quarters, you will not be permitted to register for more than 18
credits. First quarter students are not permitted to register
for more than 18 credits.
- If you are attempting to register for a variable credit class,
and are given an "overload" error message, drop one of the other
classes, then register the variable credit class. Change the
credits from 5 to your desired number of credits, then re-register
the class you dropped. The system automatically assumes 5
credits for any variable class, which can result in an overload.
- Web registration is disabled after the 3rd day of class.
Any changes after this day must be made using an add/drop form.
