Game Recaps 2005

Preseason

3/12/05 @Wenatchee CC L(12-4), L(5-1)
The first games of the season are always interesting. We had a very dry winter, so we were able to get outside for quite a few practices before our first game. Once the sun started rising at about 7:15, we decided it was light enough to be able to actually hit the ball at them and do some live hitting, rather than just run bases. All those days of preparation still do not compare to stepping in the box against an opponent. Needless to say, we had one bad inning in the first game, in which all 12 runs were scored. After that inning, Katie got in her groove and held them scoreless the remainder of the game. The coaching staff was really impressed with the way the team stayed in the game and kept their intensity up, despite being down by such a large margin. The game ended by a couple base running errors, but we were aggressive on the base path, which bodes well.
In the second game, Kelsey put on her game face and pitched a heck of a game. We scored first in the 2nd inning and Wenatchee followed with one run in the 3rd. Unfortunately, we repeated the same problem from the first game and had one bad inning where WVCC scored 4 more runs. It was a much better game than the first and the coaches were much more encouraged by that outing.

3/21/05 @Shasta College L(3-1)
Our trip to California started out well against a very tough team. Kelsey pitched really well, hit her spots and kept their hitters off-balance. Brittnae had a nice triple that scored Sandra for our only run. It was a very clean game, no errors by either team. We played on a great complex, Big League Dreams, a synthetic surface that is fashioned after different major league ballparks. It was a good experience for the team and Shasta was fun team to play. The second game was rained out, so we went and worked out in the weight room with their team. Thanks to Sonny Stupek and his team for being such gracious hosts.

3/22/05 @Butte College L(7-0), L(6-0)
The second day in California was a little tougher on the team. They weren't quite ready to play and came out a little shell-shocked against some very good pitching. We had 3 hits all day and couldn't move any runners around to score. Defensively, we had some errors, but also saw some outstanding play by Andrea at 3B. Our outfielders got a workout in these games and held up pretty well. The pitchers both got hit pretty hard, but kept their composure. They learned a lot during these games and the coaching staff learned a lot about our players' determination, work ethic and attitude.

3/24/05 @Menlo College - Rained Out
Unfortunately, the weather did not hold up for us to finish our trip. We headed home early, giving the team a few more days to recuperate and get ready for the season.

Regular Season

4/2/05 Everett CC - L(7-5), L(15-2)
Our first home game of the season became our first played game. The weather has caused a lot of problems, but we were able to get two games in right before the rain started. We did pretty well in the first game offensively, but left 9 runners on base. Kelsey pitched 7 1/3 innings, but ran out of gas in the end. Defensively, we had 5 errors and and allowed Everett to come back in the game in the 7th when they scored 5 runs on 7 hits. We scored 2 runs back in the bottom of the 7th, but left the bases loaded. Andrea hit a hard line drive to right center, but their RF was camped out and made the catch for the 3rd out. Katie went 2-3, and Andrea went 3-4 with 2 RBI's.
In the second game, Everett threw the same pitcher, but we couldn't put together any hits to score runs until the 4th inning. In the meantime, Everett jumped all over Katie in the 2nd inning and scored 6 runs. The team couldn't pick themselves up after that inning and the situation got worse in the 3rd when they scored 9 more runs. Brittnae went 2-3, Katie went 2-3, but everyone else struggled to get into the game. An unfortunate finish after the first one.

4/5/05 Peninsula CC - L(8-6 8 inn.), W(5-2)
We played a much better game offensively, but the defense lost the ball game today making 10 errors. We scored 5 runs in the 2nd and I thought we'd run away with the game, but didn't score anymore until the 8th. Ashley bunted a foul ball off her throwing hand ring finger and she has to come out of the game.  Kelsey pitched a heck of a game, but struggled in the 8th inning and PCC scored 3 runs. We came back with one run and had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but couldn't score the runners. Brittnae went 2-5, Katie went 2-4, Jessica went 2-4, Kaitlin went 2-5, and  Kelsey went 2-3. We have to get rid of that one bad inning and we'll win some.
The second game went much better defensively and we were able to score 2 runs in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th. Katie held them scoreless until the 7th inning, her stuff was working against their batters. Even though we wereconcerned about Ashley's finger, we decide to put her in at 2B (short throw) and Brittnae moves over to SS. Sandra went 2-3 and scored 2 runs. When she gets on she scores.

4/6/05 @Shoreline CC Postponed from 3/29/05 due to rain - L(1-0 9 inn.), W(4-1)
It was a pitcher's dual in the first game. Neither team could get any hits and despite going 9 innings, was still over in 2 hours. Kelsey pitched really well again, but gave up back to back doubles in the bottom of the 9th to score the only run of the game. It's really hard to pitch two extra inning games in a row, but she held them to 1 hit through 8 innings. Offensively, we got 3 runners on base, 2 by error and 1 hit by Ashley. That won't win any ballgames.
Fortunately, Shoreline didn't have another pitcher, so we faced the same one. This time we went up with better timing and discipline and we scored 1 run in the 1st inning to break the ice. Katie helped herself out by getting on base and scoring on an RBI by Kaitlin. In the 5th, Kelsey started with a base hit, Sandra got hit by a pitch again, Brittnae laid down a bunt that got a little too far away from the plate and forced Kelsey out at 3B, Katie followed with another base hit and Jessica hit a single up the middle. We scored another in the 6th. Katie  worked out of a few jams and held them off the entire game until the 5th when they scored their only run on a communication error. A  much better second game by the T-birds.

4/8/05 @ Skagit Valley CC - L(7-6), L(8-5)
A windy, cold day up in Mount Vernon brought out some rocky play from the team. In the first game, Kelsey held their hitters at bay for the majority of the game. We scored first in the top of the first with aggressive base running. In the bottom of the 6th, Skagit pulled in 3 runs on 2 errors and some timely hitting. We struggled getting another run, until the top of the 7th when the team busted open for 5 runs to go up 6-3. Unfortunately, we couldn't put away their offense due to another 4 errors and we ended up losing by one. Very disappointing loss. Katie went 2-4, Jessica 2-4 with an RBI double scoring 2 runs.
In the second game, Skagit had momentum and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. We came back in the top of the 2nd to tie it up, but Skagit put together a string of 7 hits and scored 4 runs off Katie in the bottom of the 3rd. We were able to score 2 runs in the top of the 5th, but couldn't make anything else happen offensively. We played a better defensive game, but the errors are really affecting the pitchers. Jessica went 3-4 with 2 RBI's and a triple, Kelsey went 2-3 with 2 RBI's.

4/14/05 @Edmonds CC - Postponed from 4/1 due to rain; rescheduled for 4/4, 4/7, 4/11- L(5-3), L(10-0)
We finally get our two games in with Edmonds. The coaching staff is trying to figure out what combinations to put together for both defense and offense. The team is really down right now and can't seem to get it together. We're seeing a lot of down faces and unfortunately it is affecting some people's game. We decide to pitch Katie the first game to mix stuff up. She pitched a great game again. Hit her spots and had their hitters off-balance. Edmonds put together a couple hits in the 2nd and 4th inning to score 5 runs. We scored 2 in the 5th and another in the 6th, but just couldn't seem to get the offense going. Defensively, we had a few poorly timed errors that resulted in runs scored. Brittnae went 2-4 with an RBI double, Katie 3-3, Andrea 1-3 with 1 RBI.
The second game was the most disappointing loss of the season. The team was down, there was no energy, no effort and no drive to even be on the field. We were sent home in 5 innings with each person only getting 2 at bats. They just couldn't seem to flush the first game and come out and play with any intensity. The coaching staff can only talk so much about playing with heart, at some point the team has to do it for themselves. Once again Katie got on base each at bat going 1-2. The only other hit came from Sandra. We have to work harder and want to be here.

4/19/05 Olympic CC - L (7-0), L (6-4)
New day, same long faces from some of the team. We couldn't put any offense together and had 4 errors. The errors wouldn't hurt so much if the offense makes up for the difference. Unfortunately, today there was no offense. Jessica went 1-3, Andrea 2-2, but we couldn't push a run across the plate. We tried to mix up some short game with our hitting, to no avail. Katie pitched really well again, but the defense didn't back her up.
Game two of the day, Kelsey got out of the first inning allowing one run and we came back and were able to score in the bottom of the 1st inning. We had a few more runners on base this game, but some base running errors cost us our opportunities to score. We were down 4-1 and had our last opportunity to stay in the game. We scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to tie it up with some help from Olympic's pitcher. We finally saw some energy and excitement from the team. In the top of the 8th, Olympic's power hitters came up and scored a 2 run home run. We couldn't get back the 2 runs and the game was over. We had quite a few runners on base from errors, but only had 4 hits all day. If we can get rid of the defensive and base running errors we will see improvement. Brittnae 1-2, Jessica 1-4, Andrea 1-3.

4/21/05 Green River CC Postponed from 4/12/05 due to rain. L (11-0), L (14-2)
We have not been able to put together any productive offense or affective defense in the last couple weeks and it showed today. Despite the attitude of the team being much improved, GRCC hitters jumped on the pitchers and put together hits combined with our errors to score a lot of runs. Offensively, we had 7 hits in both games. Frustration continues to grow, but we need to be able to get past it and play our game. Brittnae went 2-6, Ashley 2-5, Jessica 1-3, Andrea 1-5, Kaitlin 1-5.

4/22/05 @Bellevue CC L (9-8), L (2-1)
Prior to the games today, I talked with both the infield and outfield about what they needed to do to have better games. The outfield needed to make a better effort to catch every fly ball that came and the infield needed to be less manic when a routine play was happening. It was a quieter day on the field and we cut down on the defensive errors and played really solid games. We had quite a few opportunities to score runs in the first game, but were a little hesitant on the bases, which cost us 2 or 3 runs. We needed to be more aggressive on the base path and didn't take advantage of some passed balls. We scored 8 runs, 4 in the 3rd inning and 4 in the 7th inning. We struggled laying down sacrifice bunts so we'll be working on that. Andrea played a great game at 3B and drove in Brittnae on an  assisted 2-run home run in the 3rd inning to add to two runs scored by Sandra and Ashley. Bellevue tied it up in the 4th inning on a couple base hits and an error. They scored another 4 runs in the 5th. We could have gotten down, but we played great defense in the 6th inning to hold them and then scored another 4 runs on a double by Jessica, a couple passed balls and a beautiful slap by Erin. We had the opportunity to score more, but left two runners on. Bellevue came back in the bottom of the 7th to score after a double by the lead-off batter, a sacrifice bunt to move her over and a slow ground ball to 2B to score the run.  Brittnae went 1-3 with 2 runs, Andrea 2-3 with 2 runs, Jessica 1-3 with 1 run, Erin 1-2 with 1 run. A much better effort by all.
The second game was another battle. Kelsey pitched really well and threw short innings. Defensively, we committed one error, which is much improved from recent play. Bellevue scored in the 3rd and we answered in the 4th with one run. We were much more aggressive on the bases and had opportunities to score, but we couldn't push another run across. Once again the bottom of the 7th, Bellevue got a couple runners on with walks and then a hard hit ball to short scored the winning run. Jessica went 2-3 with 1 RBI for the only hits of the game. The girls were proud of the games they played, but realize they need to hit the ball to score runs.

4/23/05 Shoreline CC L (4-0), L (9-0)
Both games against Shoreline tell the same story: we are struggling to hit the ball and move runners around.  We also had runners on base and couldn't lay down sacrifice bunts, so the batter gives up 2 strikes and the runner stays on 1B with 2 outs. We have to do better at the basics of the game. The defense was solid in the first game and Kelsey pitched a great game. She held Shoreline scoreless until the 5th inning and then seemed to run out of gas in the 7th when Shoreline got 3 hits and scored 2 more. Ashley went 1-3, Brittnae 1-3 double, Andrea 1-3 double, Kelsey 1-3, Sandra 1-2.
We had 2 opportunities to score in this game and were held scoreless again with only 2 hits. Katie threw well the 1st inning, but struggled in the 2nd when 2 runs scored before settling into the 3rd inning. Ashley blocked a low pitch in the 3rd  inning and hit her broken finger hard. We took her out after she tried to bat and couldn't make it back onto the field. She's been tough throughout the pain and has continued to be a leader on and off the field. Shoreline scattered runs in the rest of the game and ended up getting 9 total. In the 7th inning, the leadoff batter hit a line drive up the middle off Katie's abdomen. She was able to finish the inning, but will be in pain. Offensively, we had two hits: Sandra went 1-3 and Kaitlin 1-3. The team enjoyed my coaching antics today.  I had a fun time  arguing calls with the umpires, though I nearly had a coronary after the 5th visit. I think I came out of the dugout 6 times - at least half of them were calls that should've gone our way. I don't think I've ever been homered on my own field as badly as today, but when things aren't going well, it seems that everything just doesn't go your way. One of those life lessons.  We also have the mid-season injuries piling up. I don't think there's a single person on the team right now who isn't getting something taped, wrapped or massaged.

4/26/05 Edmonds CC L (10 - 1), L (9 - 0)
We spend Monday's practice bunting, bunting, bunting, bunting and more bunting. My goal for the team was to score one run in each game. We stressed the importance of doing the little things because they often add up to runs scored. They came out today dragging a little. The injuries are really taking a toll: Jessica is in a knee brace and not playing, Katie had an ultrasound on her stomach and though there is no damage, she's not able to run well. Kelsey pitched both games and Edmonds caught up with her quickly. They are a good hitting team and showed it with repeated deep hits to the fence. We played pretty well defensively, but did have one long inning in the first game due to 3 errors and some hard hit balls. Sandra went 1-2, Brittnae 1-3, Andrea 1-2 scoring the only run, and Leah 1-2.
In the second game, Edmonds came out swinging and never stopped. We were unable to get any runs scored despite having a couple opportunities. We had a really poor call at 1B by the field umpire to end the game. I gave the girls that run scored despite the official scoring being different. We executed every sacrifice bunt opportunity today, which was the second goal I had for them. So despite the score, there were some good things that came out of the games. Those little improvements are necessary to play better ball. Andrea went 1-2 with a double and Kelsey 1-2. A much needed day off tomorrow is in order.
