2004 Game Recaps

Post Pre-Season Play - Arizona - 3/18-22/04      After a difficult pre-season in Arizona, the team returned to practice on our friendly dirt. The leadership of the captains really shaped our practices. The women showed increased intensity and realized how hard they had to work to achieve their goals this year. We spent the week making some defensive changes and sharpening up the infield. By Friday, we had reiterated the need for more aggressive at-bats and laying out for the ball to many times that if it didn't happen on Saturday, I think they would've hurt each other.

Highline vs Green River - 4/3/04 - W(6-0) W(4-3)      Saturday morning, the team came ready, focused and energized to play our season opener. We had to put Lacey on the DL for the weekend due to a back injury, but Mandy and Katie both threw well in their outings. In the first game, Mandy pitched a 2-hitter with 8 strikeouts and no walks and was backed up with solid defense; Green River did not advance a runner past 1B. Offensively, we scored one run in the first inning to give Mandy some run support and followed with 5 more runs. Andra and Emma had great twin power, but went 2-4 with two singles and scored 4 of the 6 runs. Casey stepped up and also went 2-4 with 2 singles.
In game two, Katie started out strong and our offense again scored first. However, after the first 2 runs, Green River came back and scored 2 on an error in the 2nd and then another run in the 5th to put us behind. We put Mandy in for relief and she held GRCC. They held us until the bottom of the 6th, when we capitalized on an error to tie the score. After going into extra innings, Brittnae laid down her 4th beautiful lefty slap of the day and got on by an error on the 1st baseman. Coach Schmidt called for a bunt and run and Emma laid down a beauty. The 3rd baseman overthrew the base and it got past the right fielder, scoring Brittnae for the winning run in the bottom of the 8th. Quite a barn burner, but the Lady T-Birds pulled through. We played our type of offense and were very aggressive on the bases. Our short game was outstanding today and really caused problems for the Gators. Overall, our defense was much sharper than it had been the week before, so that was encouraging. Despite the aggressive batting, we will continue to work on being disciplined and patient at the plate - too many pop-ups.  Hopefully, we will fix that at Bellevue on Tuesday.

Highline vs Bellevue - 4/6/04 - W(13-5) W(9-1)      The team was excited about their opener and ready to get ahead of Olympic CC in the standings. Our contest against Bellevue always proves to be challenging. We got off to a sluggish start against their pitcher. BCC caught up with Mandy in the 4th and scored 2 runs. We didn't score until the top of the 5th when the BCC pitcher started to lose some of her control. She walked a couple batters, had a wild pitch and had a throwing error which scored 2 runs. With Brittnae on 3B, Andra ripped a triple into left. Emma followed with a nice line drive single to score Andra. We put Katie in for relief in the bottom of the 5th and BCC scored 3 more. The 6th inning both teams held, and then in the 7th, the slaughter began. With Brittnae laying down another perfect slap, she started a string of hits. Every batter got on base and scored a run that inning. We ended up scoring 9 more that inning. We put Lacey in to give her a little rehab inning and she went 3 up, 3 down, to earn the win.
In game 2, we jumped out and scored 3 runs with the help of doubles by Andra and Kristy. Ashley went 3-3 with a double and 2 RBI's and 2 singles. Emma had another solid day going 2-3 with 2 RBI's. We were up 9-0 at the bottom of 3. BCC scored one run in the 4th and we put Lacey in again to finish up the game in the 5th. The game was a bit stressful because of a time limit. We played a little hurry-up offense - creating outs so we could get to 5 innings and get the win instead of having to play the entire game over. Thank goodness our team is concerned with the victory rather than their personal stats. It was a great day to be a T-Bird.  Highline! You Know!!

Highline vs Olympic College - 4/9/04 - L(5-2) L(2-1)      Midweek after 2 good days of games was a little rough on Highline. Olympic came ready to play. They jumped on Mandy in the 1st inning, scoring 3 runs on 4 hits. Again in the 3rd inning, they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. We scored one in the 3rd, but pop-ups killed us. We had 12 fly balls, 6 with runners in scoring position. Bottom of the 7th, we had a little rally and scored one run, but it was too little, too late. Kaitlin had a great day going 2-3. She’s being very disciplined and hitting the ball in the gap. Final Score: 5-2 Olympic.
In game 2, we struggled again offensively – one run on 5 hits. We played a tight defensive game with no errors, but again seemed to be unable to adjust to the pitcher. We put the ball on the ground better this game, but a failure to lay down sac bunts hurt. Lacey faced 31 batters and gave up only 4 hits, had 4 strike outs and 1 walk. She had a solid outing, but wasn’t quite hitting her spots in the 1st inning. When we get those stranded runners in, we’ll be where we need to be. Final score: 2-1 Olympic.

Highline vs Shoreline - 4/10/04 - W(5-2 ) L(2-0)      We pulled out a win against a good pitcher today. We still seem to want to wait until the last opportunity to score, but we executed late in the game and pulled out a victory. Emma went 2-5 with a single, double and a run scored. Mandy ripped a clutch RBI double in the 6th to score Lacey for our first run. She went 2-4 with a single, double, RBI and run scored as well as some nice defensive play at 3B. After Shoreline tied the score in the bottom of the 7th, we went into International Tiebreaker. We broke the usual pattern of home team advantage and scored 3 runs on 2 hits and an error by Shoreline. We finished the 8th with 3 up, 3 down on a line drive catch by Lacey, a pick-off throw to 1B by Casey and a ground ball throw out from Kristy in RF to 1B. That’s Highline ball! Final score 5-2 HCC.
In the second game, we faced the same pitcher and the coaching staff stressed how they’ve seen all her stuff and need to focus and drive the ball. Unfortunately, we didn’t put hits together to score runs. We left 10 runners on base and again had some pop-ups at the wrong time. Defensively, we played very well, but Mandy had a rough 1st inning – facing 7 batters. She worked her way out of it with only one run scored, but the offense just wasn’t here to back her up. We had our chances, but when Shoreline scored in the 6th, it took the wind out of our sails and we went 3 up, 3 down in the top of the 7th. Despite the loss, we were proud of the way the women carried themselves today. The umpires remarked on their attitudes and sportsmanship. Final score: 2-0 Shoreline.

Highline vs Edmonds - 4/13/04 - L(4-2) L(5-2)      There just seems to be a bounce missing in our step. The joy of playing has taken a little hiatus. Everyone’s working really hard to play the game. It shouldn’t be so hard. Our pitchers are holding back and trying to make the ball hit its spots. As a group, our hitters are tightening up and grinding their teeth on their swings. We are repeating our offensive habits from the last 4 games – waiting too long to get runners on, then leaving them stranded (10 total) with pop-ups or strikeouts. Individually, Kaitlin had another solid day: her patience at the plate got her on base 5 times. She went 2-5 and played exceptional heads-up defense at 1B. Brittnae also had a good day: she had 2 puts out and 5 assists with no errors along with getting on base 3 times. We have the potential to bust one open. Mark and I are eager for that on Friday. We had a few errors at 3B today, but overall the defense played well to back our pitching staff. Now we need our offense and pitchers to relax and play like they can.

Highline vs. Everett Community College - 4/16/04 - W(11-3) W(50-2)      Practice yesterday was focusing on hitting line drives and groundballs. We had a brief talk about the need to pick it up some. We were going through the motions and not playing with much heart. We also talked to the pitching staff about their 1st inning performance and how many pitches it was taking to get out of the inning. So today’s victories were that much sweeter. Lacey came out on fire today. She was grooving every pitch and really had Everett on their heels She threw to only 21 batters in 5 innings with 9 strikeouts and one hit.  We tweaked the batting order a bit and it seemed to give them a little spark. The offense in the first game was exceptional. We had 12 hits and scored 11 runs – and every hit was either a ground ball or a line drive. We played the short game well today and really put hits together to score runs. We moved Emma in the line-up and she had a huge game: 3-4 with 5 RBI’s, a triple and 3 runs scored. Brittnae performed again going 2-4 with 2 runs scored. Casey and Lacey came through with clutch hits to earn 2 RBI’s a piece. Final score: 11-3 HCC in 5 innings.
In the second game, Katie started and threw 2 of her best innings as a T-bird. We scored a run in the 1st when Andra got on with a walk and Brittnae moved her with a base hit slap. With the bases loaded, Emma hit an RBI single to score her twin. Mandy pitched 2 innings and gave up 2 runs as Everett took the lead in the top of the 4th. We came back to score one in the bottom of the 5th with Jen’s RBI single. Then in the 6th, we broke the tie with 3 runs on 5 hits. Lacey closed the game and got the win. We had a couple errors in the top of the 7th to make it interesting, but we pulled out another win. Ashley played a strong game behind the plate. She bounced to get a bunt pop-up attempt and picked off the runner at first to get the 1st and 2nd out of the 7th inning. Brittnae went 3-4 with 3 base hits. Andra went 3-3 with 3 singles, a walk, 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. Shelby had good at-bats today with a key base hit to start our rally in the 6th. The win was less dominating than the 1st game, but it was a team effort. We put it all together today. These were crucial wins for us. We’re on the way now.

Highline vs. Skagit Valley College - 4/17/04 - W(8-0) W(6-3)     The emphasis we have been putting on getting on top of the ball has paid off for our hitters. We played 5 solid innings today. Lacey pitched 4 shut-out innings and faced 13 batters with 8 strike outs and one base hit. Katie came in and pitched one inning to get the save. Offensively, we were patient and chose the right pitch to hit. Andra went 2-2 with an RBI and 2 runs. Jen finally busted one open and hit a bases-loaded triple. She felt pretty good about those 3 RBI’s when she got to 3B. Not to  mention her diving 3rd out catch on the left field line. Final score: 8-0 in 5 innings.
In game 2, Mandy was pitching well and gave our defense a lot of groundball and fly ball opportunities. We let up some in the 2nd game offensively – had some trouble adjusting to their 2nd pitcher and had a few more pop-ups. Sometimes I feel like a broken record – it always seems to be the same story: we have to adjust and be disciplined. Brittnae went 3-3 with 2 runs scored. She was putting the ball wherever she wanted today. Andra hit a line drive shot to the left-center fence and flew around the bases for a 2-run home run. Kaitlin continues to shine at 1B. She had 3 line drive catches that had everyone celebrating. Ashley had another pop-up/pick-off combination today. Final score: HCC 6-3.

Highline vs. Peninsula College - 4/20/04 - W(12-0) W(4-1)      Another 5 inning first game for the T-birds today. We jumped on their pitcher and put the ball on the ground, scoring our 12 runs in the first 3 innings. We spoke about making adjustments yesterday at practice and everyone seemed to buckle down and perform offensively today. Peninsula put a shift on in the infield for a variety of players and I challenged them to hit ground balls in the holes. Quite a few were disciplined enough to do it. We saw some great moments from people who have been struggling. Jen had two doubles up the middle to the fence and scored two runs. Katie placed the ball well and had 3 RBI’s. Casey went 2 for 4 with one run scored – she has realized the need to shorten up and it is paying off. Lacey pitched 3 innings and sat down 6 of the 9 batters with strikeouts. Mandy came in and continued the shut-out facing 6 batters in 2 innings. Quite a performance by both pitchers.
In game 2, we got off to a bit of a sluggish start. We had let down offensively in the last two innings of the first game and that mental state helped Peninsula stay in the game. We were hitting pop-ups again and not being as patient at the plate. At the top of the 6th inning, Mark got on the women about their need to focus and get on top of the ball. Sometimes that’s all it takes. Lacey started the inning with a double to left-center and Shelby followed with a base hit bunt. Kristy ripped a single between short and third to score Lacey. Katie laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Shelby. Katie pitched a complete game and had her best outing of the season. One of the best parts about our road trip to Port Angeles is the “long” van ride where a variety of funny things tend to happen. This year was no different. Thanks for the laughs, ladies!

Highline vs. Green River Community College - 4/30/04 - L(2-1) L (4-3)      After a few days off at mid-season, the team came out ready to start the second half of the season. It was a hot day at the Game Farm, which helped Lacey throw a solid game. We scored first in the 3rd inning, but couldn’t put together any other hits to score. It was a quick game with few players getting on base against their pitcher. Lacey held them off until the 6th inning when they hit their way into the lead, scoring two runs on two hits. We didn’t have the drive to get back the run and the loss was hard to swallow. Everyone was a bit flat and we gave an average pitcher too many strike outs and pop-up outs. Kristy went 2-2 with two singles and scored the one run of the game.
In the second game, Mandy pitched a great game – sitting down 15 of their first 17 batters with ground ball and fly ball outs. We put together a good 5th inning and scored one run, but a base running error stopped the momentum. In the 6th, we scored 2 more runs. Unfortunately, Mandy ran out of gas in the 6th and the coaching staff didn’t recognize the need for a pitching change. Green River made us pay. They hit their way into a 4-run inning and the lead. That took the wind out of our sails and we couldn’t get the run back in the top of the 7th. We had better offensive production this game: Kristy and Lacey went 2 -4 and Mandy helped herself out with two base hits and a run scored. Not the way we wanted to start the second half – but we know it’ll be a fight for every victory.

Highline vs. Bellevue Community College - 5/1/04 - W(5-0) L(8-2)      A new day and a beautiful day to play softball. The women were ready to flush the performance from yesterday and play hard today. Once again, Lacey had her stuff and kept Bellevue off the bases the entire game. She had 7 strike-outs in 5 innings and didn’t allow a runner past 1B until the 5th inning when a fielding error and a base hit put runners on 1B and 2B. The team worked out of it with an amazing pop-up catch by Casey, getting the lead runner at 3B for the 2nd out and then a routine 6-3 for the 3rd out. We brought Katie in to close the game and she made it interesting in the 6th, loading up the bases on a couple base hits and a walk, but then she sat the next two batters down with a strike-out looking and a routine 4-3. She was stronger in the 7th inning with their 9, 1, 2 batters going 3 up, 3 down. It was a great team effort. I told them before the game that if we can score a run an inning, we’ll win the game. They scored 2 in the first and one in each of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. Andra started the game off on a high note, hitting an in-the-park home run on a 3-2 count. Not a bad way to jump start the offense. Kristy hit a triple in the 1st inning and scored on Jen’s base hit. She also scored in the 5th on a throwing error by Bellevue. Kaitlin had a great day going 2-3 with an RBI single in the 4th and 7 put-outs and 1B. The team needed the victory.
The second game was a struggle. Mandy started off pitching really well, but when Emma got hit by a pitch on the inside of her right elbow, we had to sub her out and shift the defense around – which meant moving Mandy to 3B and Lacey coming back in to pitch cold. She did well until the 5th inning when Bellevue got a couple hits and walks and scored a couple runs. We brought Katie into finish and she got the 3rd out. We couldn’t answer back on offense – being down 5-2 in the bottom of the 5th. Bellevue came back in the 6th and scored 3 more runs on some defensive errors, walks and one base hit. There were no fumes left to get it going. Despite Jen having a great day with a double and a triple, the rest of the team struggled against their pitcher. It was a hard loss to take.

Highline vs. Olympic College - 5/4/04 - L(5-4) W(5-2)      We talked to the team before practice yesterday about cutting corners and missing signs and doing things that are not helping the team. Practice was quiet and focused until 3:58pm, the last batter of the day, Mandy hits a foul ball off her helmet brim and it comes down on her nose. Blood everywhere and EMS is called. Shelby takes her to the hospital for stitches since she has to get checked out after being in a car wreck last Wednesday (concussions). So we show up to the game at Olympic with Scarface and Gimpy (Emma) and Constant Headache. We made some changes for the absence of Emma in the infield, brought Kristy in to short and decided Shelby would be OK at 3B with Lacey pitching. The women played a great game. Solid defense and good offensive answers to Olympic’s strong hitting. We scored three runs in the 3rd inning to tie it up with with a nice little double by Katie and hard hit balls on the ground by Andra and Brittnae. Jen followed with an opposite way ground ball to 2B that scored Brittnae. Olympic answered in the 4th and we answered back in the 5th. We added a new member to our “Walking Wounded Club” when Ashley popped up to pick-off a runner at 1B and somehow lost control of the ball and threw a missile right into Kaitlin’s head as she was crouched to allow the throw through to Brittnae. She was tough and finished out the game despite having a major headache. (She later went to the hospital and has a minor concussion). We left three runners on base in the 5th, which hurt us in the bottom of the 7th when Olympic hit their way into the win. It was quite a battle against a solid team.
The second game gave us another interesting chance to shift the defense around. We didn’t want Kaitlin to try to continue fielding since she was a little shaky, but knew she could hit since she had a nice single in the first game after she got pegged. We put Emma at 2B (that’s about how far she could throw without pain) and moved Brittnae over to 3B. Lacey played 1B and Shelby went to RF. We told Katie at the beginning of the game that she had to be mentally prepared to pitch 7 innings and she rocked today! Without a doubt her best performance as a T-bird. She faced only 22 batters in 6 innings and allowed only one run in the 3rd inning. Offensively, we scored on a first and third play that we love to run in the 2nd inning. With Lacey on 1B after a base hit (she went 2-4), and Emma as the Flex player for Kaitlin, we subbed her in for Kaitlin to bunt with a runner on 1B. Emma laid down a bunt to the pitcher who tried to make the play at 2B, but threw it away – advancing Lacey to 3B. It created the first and third and Emma and Lacey ran it beautifully. After the first run, they had a little dry spell until the 6th inning. Andra started us off with another base hit (she went 4-5) followed by Brittnae and Jen’s singles. With the bases loaded, Kaitlin steps in (after somehow getting a helmet onto her sore head) and hit a triple down the 1B line, scoring all three runners. In the bottom of the 7th, we weren’t sure if Katie had much more in her and when the lead-off batter got a solid base hit, we decided it was time to bring Lacey back in. Again, we had to shift the defense, we brought Kaitlin in to 1B and put Katie in RF and Shelby back at 3B and Brittnae to 2B. Lacey threw a ground ball 4-3 out, then followed with a base hit that scored the lead-off runner. With a runner on 1B, she walked the next batter, then a passed ball put runners on 2B and 3B with one out. The next batter hit an easy ground ball back to Lacey who looked the runner back and then ran the ball toward 1B, the base runner didn’t really know how to respond to Lacey’s field/throw. Kaitlin made the force out at 1B and the runner took off to home and Kaitlin had a perfect throw to Ashley to tag out the runner from 3B. What a great way to end the game! A very well-played game both offensively and defensively.

Highline vs. Shoreline CC - 5/7/04 - L(6-4) L(11-4)      One of our first cloudy games with a couple sprinkles and the team struggled through it. We were still feeling the affects of all the injuries and used all three pitchers in the first game, trying to get through Shoreline’s order. Shoreline got 2 in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings on error-filled play. It was unusual to see so many errors (6), but the level of focus just wasn’t there. We were able to get one run in the 4th and then tried to come back in the 7th inning, scoring 3, but it wasn’t enough. Andra went 2-4 and one run scored, Lacey went 2-4 with one run scored, and Casey went 1-2 with one run scored.
In the second game, Shoreline jumped on our pitchers and scored 3 in the 1st inning and then proceeded to put on 8 more. We had some costly errors again and couldn’t hit the ball off the same pitcher that the women have seen in 3 games – each having at least 12 at bats against her. The team was frustrated to not be able to perform against her again. We scored 4 runs, but couldn’t make up the deficit. We only had 3 hits this game with Lacey and Brittnae having the only RBI’s of the game. Hitting of Shoreline’s pitcher has always been tough and she proved to be a nemesis again.

Highline vs. Edmonds CC - 5/8/04 - L(2-1) W(9-6)      Our first weekend of rain the entire season seemed to help us defensively. The rain held off again until through part of the first game. We had plenty of towels in the dugout to keep game balls dry. Lacey pitched a gem today, recording 7 strike-outs and keeping Edmonds big hitters off-balance. We cut down on the errors (3), but one of the runs that scored came off an error. We had trouble getting the offense started, often trying to get it going with 2 outs. Emma (2-4) scored our only run in the 3rd and hit a 2-out double in the 7th, that I tried to stretch into a triple, but she was tagged out on a very close play to end the game. It keeps getting harder to watch Lacey pitch great games and have little run support.
Some other team stepped onto the field in the second game. Between games, the coaches talked about being more aggressive at the plate – we gave them the green light to jump on the first pitch if they could hit a line drive base hit. It was amazing how relaxed they all were! We started Katie to mix up the speed and despite three solid hits by Edmonds, our defense kept them to one run. Our first at bats, Andra and Shelby started with back to back doubles, scoring Andra to tie it up. The next inning Katie shut down their line-up and we piled on the runs. We scored 7 runs on 7 hits. We put Mandy in to start the 3rd and despite 3 solid hits by Edmonds, we got out of it with no runs. By this time, the rain was pouring down and the umpires called for a 30 minute break to see if the storm would pass. We had to suspend the game at 8-1 in the bottom of the 3rd and return on Monday to finish it. A bit of the momentum was lost and Edmonds came out with a fresh pitcher. We struggled in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings to put hits together. Mandy pitched two solid innings, allowing only one run. Then in the top of the 6th, Edmonds stung some solid line drive gappers together and scored 4 runs to make it interesting. We got one back in the 6th on a lead-off triple by Emma and RBI fielder’s choice “bunt” by Lacey. We had to put Lacey in to close the game and had a bit of tension in the dugout when an error and wild pitch got the lead-off runner to second. Lacey sat down the next two batters looking. The #1 batter came up who had been crushing the ball the last two innings and hit a line drive up the middle. Luckily, the hit held the runner on second. The next batter hit an easy ground ball to short and Emma played the base line perfectly and got the runner on 2nd to interfere with her fielding to end the game. Emma went 2-4 with a double, triple and 2 runs scored, Shelby went 3-4 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored, Kaitlin went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and one run scored.

Highline vs. Everett CC - 5/11/04 - L(5-4) W(5-2)      We desperately need to win both games today to make it less questionable at the end of the season. The first game was tight through 2 innings, Lacey pitched two great innings, facing 7 batters and striking out 3 strike-outs. We had the top of our line-up in the top of the 3rd and scored 3 runs on 6 base hits. We could have had more runs, but a couple missed signs cost us. Unfortunately, Everett answered back in the 3rd, scoring 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 errors. We fell apart during that inning. Katie came in on relief in the 4th and shut Everett down for 3 innings. We tied it up in the 6th with a single by Shelby that scored Brittnae. We had a couple chances to go ahead in the 7th, but again it was base hits with 2 outs. We put Lacey in to pitch in the 7th and gave up a run on two base hits and a costly error. We had some really strange decisions and errors on defense today that cost us tremendously. We need to sharpen up if we expect to go to NWAACC’s.
Mandy pitched a great game and had some run support, which always helps her relax and throw well. She kept Everett off-balance the entire game. We scored Andra in the 1st inning without getting a hit. The 2nd inning we had runners at 1B and 2B with no outs and couldn’t get a run out of it. In the 3rd, Shelby started us off with a base hit and Lacey followed with a double in the left-center gap. Jen laid down a beautiful RBI sacrifice bunt to score Shelby. In the 5th, we scored 3 runs on five hits with a lead-off double by Emma followed by base hits from Shelby, Lacey, Jen and Kristy. The 5 runs were enough to hold off Everett, who scored 2 runs. Defensively, we had a couple of mental errors again, but it was a cleaner game.

Highline vs. Skagit Valley - 5/14/04 - W(13-0) W(8-2)      It has come down to the wire and we have to win our final four games and count on some losses by opponents to get to NWAACC’s. The opposing coach looked at the previous game scores and pitched his #2 pitcher in the first game, who the women jumped on in the first inning, scoring 5 runs. Mandy and Katie pitched 3 and 2 innings, respectively, of shut out/no-hitter ball. They were painting the corners and mixing up their speeds, it was pretty. Offensively, everyone scored and everyone hit to produce 13 runs. Andra went 3-4 and 3 runs scored, Emma went 3-4, Jen went 2-4 and Kristy went 2-3 with 2 runs scored.
In the second game, we scored 3 runs in the first inning with 2 outs, which helped Lacey come out with confidence. Despite throwing her usual heat, Skagit managed to get their bats on the ball for dink shots behind 1B for 4 base hits and 2 runs. The offense answered back scoring 2 more in the 2nd and 5th, while Lacey got in a groove and pitched 4 more innings with one base hit, striking out 7 batters. Katie came in and closed the game with another solid outing and outstanding defensive help. Emma went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and 1 run scored, Shelby went 2-2 with 3 runs scored, Kristy went 2-4 with 1 RBI and a double. We scored 7 manufactured runs today with our 1st and 3rd’s and suicides. It was a fun baserunning day for the team. Amazing what practice does.

Highline vs. Peninsula College - 5/15/04 - W(11-3) W(6-1)      Another must-win situation for the T-birds and we pulled it out. Peninsula is a much-improved team and got some base hits off of Lacey early in the game, but only resulted in 1 run. We were a little stagnant early on (as Kaitlin said, “we’re playing like we deserve this win, we have to earn it”), but in the 4th inning we poured on 7 runs. Finally, an offensive explosion. We ran our short-game well and did some base running things that we had practiced on Thursday. Lacey pitched 3 solid innings, but wasn’t on her top game. We put Katie in to close the game in the 4th and she struggled a bit to get out of the inning, but finished the game with a strong 5th inning.
Between games, we honored the sophomores for their last regular season home game. It’s always a special day to recognize the players who have given their time to the program and made such an impact.

The second game was another successful one for the team. We scored 6 runs on 10 hits, leaving 6 runners on base. Andra went 2-3 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases. Shelby went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s, Mandy went 2-3 with one RBI and Brittnae went 2-3 with one RBI. Mandy pitched a great game throwing 6 innings and giving up only 4 hits. She fanned 12 batters today allowing only one run. We brought Katie in to close again and she pitched another great inning. We desperately needed these wins and even more – we needed the attitude and focus we had today. The relaxed concentration and focus is essential to winning ballgames. Now we have to wait to see what happens with some other teams to see if we have a chance at the championships.

Highline vs. Green River - 5/18/04 - W(5-0) Playoff Game  winner to NWAACC Tournament The pressure to win was something that pushed the team to prepare mentally and physically for the game. We decided to go with Lacey and felt confident that she was ready to go when she told me she had gotten 9 hours of sleep the night before. From the first inning, we knew she had her stuff when she sat down their first three batters with two strikeouts and an easy ground ball to first base - only throwing 11 pitches. Her performance only got better as the game went on. She ended up throwing a no-hitter with 14 strike-outs. Without a doubt, her best outing of the year. Offensively, we took awhile to warm up to their pitcher. In the 4th inning, Jen started the inning off with a line drive triple in the right-center gap. Casey had a slow rolling RBI groundball to 2B that scored the run to put us on the board. In the 5th, we got our first two batters on by error and then had Andra lay down a suicide to score Lacey. Emma laid down a nice bunt to move Brittnae to 3B and get on and Shelby followed with a single to score Brittnae. Jen followed with another suicide to score Andra. Casey followed with another groundball out that scored Emma. In the 6th, we had runners in scoring position again, but failed to score. Lacey's pitching and the 5 runs were enough to seal the victory and a trip to the NWAACC championships.
