Program Philosophy

About Our Program

As with all of Highline's athletic teams, the priority for each softball player is to be a student first. The team strives toward a high collective GPA, since that represents the priority of acquiring a college degree. The 2007 team earned a collective 3.01 GPA for the school year. Highline Softball is a tool that fosters responsibility, positive interaction, critical thinking, time management, accountability, dedication to their teammates, and helping and encouraging others to succeed.

Highline Softball emphasizes "excellence" rather than "winning." Our belief is that success is a by-product of challenging oneself to continually improve. They enjoy each challenge and see it as an opportunity. Players want to work hard each day, knowing that they will learn something that day that will make them a better player. We incorporate a "team first" mentality from the first day of fall ball as we reinforce the concepts of what it means to be a good teammate. Players are expected to develop a sense of community and responsibility toward their teammates; as well as respect toward their opponents. As we develop Highline Softball players, we also strive to develop young women who are leaders in their communities.

A Highline College Softball player:
            - is an academic leader in the classroom
            - is a coachable and eager learner
            - is a good teammate who expects dedication and respect - and gives it
            - brings her best self to the field every day
            - displays tremendous personal responsibility and accountability

            - learns to make adjustments offensively and defensively
            - understands that hard work, determination and hustle will earn respect
over talent 80% of the time
            - knows that the only things within her control are attitude, effort and what
kind of a teammate she is
            - adapts to any given situation
            - plays with passion, desire and smarts
            - respects the game - because "The Game Always Knows"
