Academic Advising

Academic Advising for our student athletes is a program we have implemented to help our athletes become as successful academically as they are in their chosen sports. We have had great success since we began this program. Our Men's wrestling team was named Academic All-American in 1997 and 1999, when the team won the "National Academic All-American Team" award by having the greatest number of individuals achieving a 3.0 or higher GPA. Our Men's Basketball team has also shown great success academically. In June 1998, we graduated all six sophomores with AA Degrees. Two of our Men went on to the University of Southern California, with full basketball scholarships.

In June, 1999, our Women's basketball team graduated all five sophomores.  Two of the team members received full scholarships to University of Southern Colorado, where they played basketball and completed their Bachelor's degrees.  Two others attended The Evergreen State College playing basketball and continuing the quest for their Bachelor's degrees, and one has moved on to Western Washington University.

Highline Community College is committed to the success of all Thunderbird athletes.  We'd like to see Highline Community College retain 100% of our student athletes. Ideally, all will graduate in a timely fashion. Every year we improve our retention statistics, but the Highline Community College Athletic Staff is always seeking new and better strategies to help our athletes become top students. As always, classroom participation will be carefully monitored, and this year, our top goal is to have a student-athlete cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better! We want our Thunderbirds to be the best overall academic team in the NWAACC!
