National Wrestling Tournament (February 24, 2008)

In a tournament that features the top Junior Colleges in the country, the Highline wrestlers would face their toughest competition yet.  Highline was led by 157 lb. workhorse, and Academic All-American Marshall Giovanni with a 3.7 GPA.  Marshall came into the tournament with a #7 ranking, a 25-7 overall record, and a perfect 25-0 record against Junior College competition.  Marshall had a bye the first round and watched half his teammates lose their opening matches.

Round 1 saw 149lb. Chessjuan Monk and 197lb. Mike Morales lead the team with victories.

However, in round 2 Marshall defeated Alex Suarez of Springfield Tech 8-3, while teammate Chessjuan Monk was defeated by Colby’s finalist T.J. Hepburn 13-9.  Mike Morales by National Champion Jamelle Jones 14-8.

In the quarterfinals, Giovanni drew the #2 ranked wrestler in the U.S., in 4 X State Champion Carrington Banks.  Banks was extremely aggressive, and the only points scored were by escapes putting the match into a deadlock tie at 1 a piece.  However, again in the third round, Giovanni again was forced to fight off several shots.  In return, the referees awarded Banks a point for Giovanni stalling putting the match 2-1 in favor of Banks.  With 16 seconds left in the match Giovanni fired a shot, but it drove Banks out of bounds.  With the 2 wrestlers coming back to the center and 9 seconds left, Marshall fired one last shot in the closing seconds that sent him ahead of Banks for good with 2 seconds left scoring a narrow 3-2 decision over who many felt was the favorite to win the National Title.

In the consolation rounds Pano Dreves won 1 match but then suffered a second defeat.  Ionica Hanson 141, Craig Jackson 165, and Zach Corbett Heavyweight lost their first 2 matches.

Chessjuan Monk looked like a man on a mission as he was rolling through the tournament.  In his last match he was dominating his opponent Darren Carrero from Gloucaster 5-0.  Unfortunately, Carrero chose the top position in round 2 and came up with a miracle move that caught Monk on his back for the fall.  It was disappointing because it looked like Monk was headed towards becoming an All-American.

At 197, Mike Morales continued his tear reeling off 2 straight victories and making it to the evening session and 1 victory away from becoming an All-American.  Unfortunately, he got into a situation and was unable to recover losing his match to become an All-American.

This brought us to our lone All-American who was one match away from becoming Highline’s 2nd National Champion in 4 years.  However, standing in his way would be the #1 ranked wrestler in the country in Devaugh Perkins from North Iowa.  Perkins struck first and led 4-2 at the end of round 1.  However, the first take-down brought Coach Norton flying out of his seat, as he again questioned the referee judgment about the takedown.  Round 2 saw Perkins escape and Marshall blow him off his feet with a double.  Perkins escaped and as round 2 came to a close, Perkins took Marshall down to go up 8-5.  Round 3 saw Marshall escape to go close the gap at 8-6.  With 30 seconds, Marshall was in on the leg close to out of bounds, but he did secure control but it took the referees 15 seconds to call the take-down.  With only 4 seconds it was tied at 8-8.  Unfortunately, Perkins had 1:04 seconds of riding time.  If a wrestler has 1:00 minute at the end of the match, he is awarded a point.  Marshall lost a razor tight 1 point decision by 4 seconds.  The big questions were did Perkins have the takedown in round 1, and did the referees take to long to call the takedown in round 3?  Unfortunately, no one knows for sure but the referees.

It's funny, every referee in the tournament is from  Minnesota or Iowa.  Marshall was a class act and finished a questionable 2nd in the country.  Highline as a team finished 13th in the country, even though several of their wresters didn’t have a great weekend.  Giovanni has verbally committed to come back to Highline and win a National Title next year.

Highline has had wrestling for 30-40 years.  Over the last 5 years they have had 35 National Qualifiers, averaging 7 national qualifier a year.  In the last 4 years, they have had 5 Region 18 Champions, as well as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Region 18 Championships.  In addition, the last 5 years Highline has produced 6 All-Americans, 3 National Finalists, and 1 National Champion.  In a sport that doesn’t get a lot of recognition, Highline is producing some phenomenal wrestlers!!!  This wouldn’t be possible with out the support of the faculty at Highline, as well as the Athletic Director John Dunn who has given the High-School wrestlers of Washington a place to call home where Academics is put before Athletics!!!

Preview of the Nationals (February 21, 2008)

This weekend the wrestling season will end;  however, the big question is where the Highline Wrestlers will be standing.  The Thunderbirds will roll into the national tournament led by their captain Pano Dreves, who is currently ranked #5 in the country.  He will be joined by 157 lb. standout Marshall Giovanni who is ranked #7, and Michael Morales who is ranked #8 respectively.  Highline will look for a boost from Craig Jackson at 165, and from Ionica Hanson 141, Chessjuan Monk 149, and Heavyweight Zach Corbett.  The action gets under way on Friday at 10:00 AM and concludes Saturday at 8:00 PM!

Region 18 Championships (February 9th, 2008)

For the 4th time in 4 years, Highline left the Region 18 tournament with the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.  Pano Dreves claimed the honor by winning the Region in the toughest weight class of the tournament.  What was even more amazing about the feat, is that Dreves hadn’t been on the mat in 2 weeks, due to suffering a small fracture in his tibia.  Pano showed the heart of champion.  What he did this week is hard to put into words.  I’ve never seen anything like it in 25 years of wrestling.   In his opening match, he beat Jared Smith of Yakima who defeated him earlier in the year.  Then in the finals, he knocked off the 4th ranked wrestler in the country in David Laird from Southwestern Oregon.  Most people just saw Pano winning.  He won being at about 50 percent.  Pano improved his overall record to 18-7.

However, not to be outdone, Pano had some championship company as teammate Marshall Giovanni captured the championship with a 3-2 win over Zolboo Enkhdan who was a Junior National Champ from Mongolia, now wrestling for Southwestern Oregon.  Marshall had a bye in the first round, and then defeated a wrestler from NIC in the semi-finals.  Marshall improved to 25-6.  He has been automatic for our team all year!

We had another pleasant surprise, as Michael Morales lives up to his #2 seed by defeating David Halicki of Clackamus in the semi-finals.  Unfortunately, he was unable to keep the momentum going as he fell to Southwestern’s Jason Troxel in the finals.  However, 2nd in the toughest Region is awfully good for a freshman.  Morales improved to 11-6.

At 165, #1 seeded Craig Jackson won his first match against Mike Hanson of Yakima.  He was then upset by a wrestler he pinned earlier in the year in D.J. May of NIC.  Jackson then battled back and placed a strong 3rd.  Jackson is now 13-1!

Chessjuan Monk also equaled Craig’s feat.  Chessjuan was upset in the semi’s by Mike Beeson of Clackamas who he pinned earlier in the year.  He then battled back to place 3rd, and improved to 23-12.  Chessjuan has done a fantastic job this season.

Highline then had 2 other wrestlers selected to the National tournament.  The first was Ionica Hanson who placed 4th, and the second was Heavyweight Zach Corbett who placed 5th.  Ionica was in a weight that has 3 returning All-Americans.

You can support Highline wrestling by attending meets, sending wrestlers to Highline, or donating!

Regional Preview (February 9th, 2008)
The next meet will be the National Qualifier in Clackamas, Oregon on 2/9/08.  This year we have been plagued with injuries.  We lost superstar Norman Orr in December for the year, with a season ending elbow injury.  Orr had pinned 14 of 17 opponents.  Anthony Zender (141) showed early that he was capable of being a National Champ by beating a pair of All-Americans.  However, he was recalled by the Marines and sent to Iraq.  And we have had our bumps and bruises like everyone else too.

Highline will be led by this years most durable and consistent wrestler Marshall Giovanni.  Marshall is making some adjustments to his offense that could pay big dividends at the Nationals.  He is currently 23-6, and will be seeded #1 in the Region.
Our other #1 seeded wrestler will be Craig Jackson, who has a perfect 10-0 record.  Unfortunately, Craig has seen limited action this season.  It will be interesting to see how he performs in 2 weeks.

Pano Dreves will be seeded 2nd, right behind top seeded Dino May who is ranked 3rd nationally.  However, Dreves will need to overcome a little adversity to move on.

At 197, Mike Morales will also be seeded #2.  He has done everything you could ask of a freshman, and has shown a lot of improvement.  I’m expecting big things from Morales.

Chessjuan Monk (149) has posted 20 wins this season, and should be able to move on to the National Tournament.  He will probably be the number 3 seed.

Heavyweight Zach Corbett is in a tough weight, but should move on.

The dark horse will be Ionica Hanson at 141.  He had a tight match with Chris Harris.  Ionica may be in the toughest weight in the tournament with 3 All-Americans in his weight.

Highline has averaged 7 national qualifiers over the last 5 years, and I’m expecting us to do the same this year.

Simon Frasier vs. Highline (January 26, 2008)
Things really started to unraved for Highline in this meet.  We were already forfeiting at 165, and trouble was right around the corner.  At 125, Kyle Heath lost to J.J. Lum 15-11.  Highline lost another close match at 133, as Marcus Sanchez was defeated by Alec Turra 9-5.  Ionica Hanson gave Highline a boost with a 8-2 decision.  At 149, Chessjuan dropped an 11-1 decision to Bo Greyson.  Marshall Giovanni then beat Isaac Wing 12-6 at 157.  Highline then forfeited at 165.  At 174, Pano Dreves was forced into a medical forfeit with a possible break in his fibia during the match.  Pat MacDonald pinned James Jensen at 184.  Mike Morales was given a forfeit at 197, and Zach Corbett was pinned at heavyweight.  The final score was 32-12.

Highline vs. Douglas (January 26, 2008)
Finally, we came into a meet without a forfeit.  Kyle Heath got us started at 125, with a 14-9 decision over Rafia Charnia.  Marcus Sanchez was defeated by Aso Palani at 133.  At 141, Ionica Hanson pinned Tony Schroder.  Chessjuan Monk then followed suite at 149, with a fall over Raj Rai.  Marshall Giovanni then posted a 12-4 major decision over Richard Kaufelt.  Unfortunately, as usual something had to go wrong, and it began at 165, when Craig Jackson had to forfeit due to a concussion.  In a series of confusing events, Pano Dreves ended up wrestling Douglas’ 197 pound Michael Rakefield, and posted a strong 9-5 decision.  Highline then picked up a forfeit at 184, and Michael Morales won at 197.  Zach Corbett rounded out the meet with a fall over Kubler Gil.  Highline got their 7th dual meet victory of the year with solid 41-11 decision.

Clackamas Open  (January 19, 2008)
Pano Dreves lead all Highline wrestlers with a very solid 2nd place finish.  He lost in the finals to 3rd ranked Dino May of NIC 5-6.  The point Dino was awarded was a penalty point.  Marshall Giovanni 157, placed a strong 3rd to earn his 21st victory of the year.  At 149, Chessjuan Monk made it to the top 5, and won his 18th match of the year.  All 3 have been the top finishers for Highline throughout the year.  The rest of the team showed good improvement, but failed to make the placing round.  Highline will be on the mat this Sat. at 12 noon, with duals against Pacific and Simon Frasier.

Yakima at Highline (December 9, 2007)

After losing 2 of our top wrestlers, we were forced to re-tool and shuffle our line up around.  At 125, Kyle Heath received a forfeit.  Then at 133, newcomer Marcus Sanchez was pinned by Kellen Hopkins.  Ionica Hanson then lost a tight decision to Eddie Bush 5-4 after cutting 10 lbs.  Chessjuan Monk then defeated a feisty Michael Guzman 5-2 at 149.  Marshall Giovanni continued his impressive season with a fall over Nathan Nelson at 157.  Next, at 165 undefeated Craig Jackson used a 12-4 major decision to defeat Russell Lewellyn.  Pano Dreves then picked up an easy 6 points with a forfeit at 174.  Highline was defeated at 184 when James Jensen lost to Benji Martin.  At 197, Michael Morales pinned Tyler Bullington.  Lastly, Zach Corbett defeated Izzy Torres.  Highline’s next meet will be against powerhouse North Idaho on Jan. 10

Highline vs. Southwestern Oregon (December 9, 2007)

In this meet, we clearly beat ourselves.  Undefeated Craig Jackson was forced to sit out do to work, and a shoulder injury.  Then 141 pound phenom, Anthony Zender was unable to make weight, and to add insult to injury Highline’s most winningest wrestler Norman Orr at 184 may be lost for the season.  During his match it appeared as though he tore all of the ligaments in his elbow.  It looked like a season ending injury.  After the first 3 weights, Highline wasn’t even on the board and were down 12-0.  Ionica Hanson scored a solid 5-0 decision over Kyle Taylor.  Marshall Giovanni then beat Zol Boo Enkhba 6-1.  At 165, 149 pound Chessjuan Monk moved up 2 weights but lost a 4-1 decision.  Pano Dreves then scored a final takedown at the buzzer to pull out a 4-3 decision over David Laird.  At 184, Orr was forced to have a medical forfeit, and immediately left to the emergency room.  Michael Morales continued his brilliance scoring a 8-1 decision.  Zach Corbett was pinned at heavyweight and Highline lost 27-12, to a team they dominated earlier in the year.

The final score is Southwestern Oregon 27 Highline 12

Highline vs. Clackamas (December 7, 2007)

What looked like it would be close meet ended up being a lopsided score with Highline outscoring Clackamas 29-10.  At 125, Kyle Heath outscored Thomas Jake 14-13.  Newcomer Marcus Sanchez lost a major decision to Brandon Minn.  At 141, Anthony Zender added another 6 with a forfeit.  Apparently, Chessjuan Monk felt he needed to follow suit.  Mike Beeson tried a roll, but Chessjuan immediately pounced on him and pinned him.  At 157, Marshall Giovanni decisioned Jace Lewis 11-4.  At 165, Craig Jackson needed overtime to decision Chris Spencer.  Pano Dreves then dropped a 9-6  decision to Brandon Jackson.  Norman Orr continued his roll with a major decision over Richard Jensen at 184.  Michael Morales then posted a 10-0 decision over Ransom Porter.  Zach Corbett then lost 13-4 at heavyweight.

the final score is Highline 29 Clackamas 10.

Best of the West  (November 16, 2007)

The best of the west tournament featured some of the top talent in the Northwest.  Returning Pac-10 champion Oregon State led the field, followed by Boise State.  It is an extremely tough tournament for junior college wrestlers because they are competing against larger schools.

It was also the third weekend in a row that we drove to competition that was at least 8 hours away.  Only this time we entered the tournament with 2 starters out, including one that is currently undefeated.  This being Pano Dreve 174, and Craig Jackson who is currently a perfect 8-0.

The Thunderbirds came out sluggish on Saturday.  Anthony Zender suffered a first round defeat, and was unable to right the ship.  Highline’s top finisher came in Norman Orr who made the top 6.  Marshall Giovanni finished right behind Orr, when he was beaten in the quarterfinals by Oregon State’s starter.  Chessjuan Monk also went a strong 3-2.  Monk holds endless talent, but technique will be his key to success.

Highline will finally come home against one of the top teams in the Region 18 in Clackamas.  This dual will take place Dec. 7.

Highline vs. Simon Frasier (November 10, 2007)

Simon Frasier was clearly the most balanced team we have wrestled, aside from North Idaho. At 125 Kyle Heath was pinned by J.T. Love.  At 133 Highline forfeits. At 141 Anthony Zender pinned Max Arcained. At 149 Chessjuan Monk lost to Isacc Wong 12-7. At 157 Marshall Giovanni d. Bo Gregson 8-7 on riding time.  The controversy came when the judges awarded Gregson the riding time.  However, after 2 matches in was overturned when the judges realized they awarded riding time to the wrong wrestler. At 165 Craig Jackson pinned Hardeen Arjuda and moved his record to a perfect 8-0!At 174 Pano Dreves was decisioned by Dave Krawzchezki 5-2. At 184 Norman Orr pinned Patrick MacDonald and moved to 10-2.  Orr has been yet to be defeated by a Junior College wrestler. At 197 Mike Morales pinned James Ford. At HWt. Zach Corbett lost a decision to Jagroup Bhutari.

The final score is Highline 27 Simon Frasier 21.  Highline and moves to 4-1 overall in dual meets.

Highline vs. Yakima (November 9th, 2007)

At 125 Kyle Heath was defeated by Phillip Cowan.  However, that was the only loss that Highline suffered. 133 Highline Forfeit. At 141 Anthony Zender squeaked out a tight 4-3 decision over Dryan Dimitrov. At 149 Chessjuan Monk scored a fall over Michael Guzman with 6 seconds left in the match. At 157 Marshall Giovanni scores a 13-4 decision over Russell Luzlan to continue his winning ways.  At 165 Craig Jackson pinned Nathan Nilson in the first round.  At 174 Pano Dreves decisioned an athletic Eddie Gray 7-3. At 184 Norman Orr made quick work of Tyler Bullington as he pinned him for the second time. At 197 Michael Morales decisioned Benji Martin 7-1.  At HWT. Zach Corbett decisioned Izzy Torres 7-5.

The final score is Highline 34 Yakima 10.

Southwestern Oregon vs. Highline (November 8, 2007)

After sitting in a van for 7 ½ hours, its always difficult to wrestle.  However, the Thunderbirds looked awfully good.  At 125 Kyle Heath was defeated by John Sutton.  Heath could have won the match, however, a near fall was the difference.  At 133 We have continued to struggle at this weight as we forfeited and gave up 6 free points.  At 141 Anthony Zender took on 4th ranked Joe Michelle who is always dangerous due to his monkey roll.  Zender used several take downs en route to his 8-3 decision. For 149 Highline got some added help as Chessjuan Monk scored 6 team points with a fall over Dan Hethorn.  This also tied the meet at 9-9.  Filling in for Marshall Giovanni at 157, Zach Pesicka did all that was asked as he lost a decision to Zolboo Enkwood.  At 165 Craig Jackson beat up on Adam Fugitt 12-2.  Jackson is learning how to use a variety of offense to defeat his opponents. At 174 Pano Dreves used a pair of takedowns to defeat the strongest wrestler in his weight in David Laird. 5-4.  This brought the meet to 16-12 Highline.  Norman Orr , at 184 continued to roll as he glued Chris Panonne in the second round.  For 197 Michael Morales who was freshly pulled out of redshirt won a solid 5-0 decision. At HWT Ryan Hoover pinned Zach Corbett at heavyweight.

The final score is Highline 25 Southwestern Oregon 18 as Highline knocks off 8th ranked Lakers.

Pacific Open (Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007)
After 5 ½ hours to North Idaho and wrestling, then 4 hours back to Yakima and staying there on Friday night, then wrestling Yakima in the morning.  We loaded up the van and drove 4 hours to Portland and wrestled in the Pacific Open the next day.  The Thunderbirds showed major perseverance and showed they are very durable.  Kyle Heath got his first 2 wins at 125, as did Brian Hirai at 141.  For the second straight day, Anthony Zender was unable to wrestle due to a knee injury.  At 149, Chessjuan Monk placed in the top 6.  Highline had 2 finalists at 157 and 165.  Marshall Giovanni lost a tight match in the finals.  There were several shaky calls throughout the match.  Craig Jackson was the lone Champion at 165.  Highline placed 4th with Pano Dreves at 174, Norman Orr at 184, and freshman Michael Morales at 197.  The Thunderbirds wrestled extremely well.

Highline vs. Yakima (Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007)
Yakima is currently the 7th ranked team in the country.  Kyle Heath was defeated at 125 by Philip Cowan.  Yakima was also handed  6 points at 133, due to the forfeit.  At 141, Deyan Dimitrov defeated Brian Hirai 7-4.  Highline finally got rolling with Chessjuan Monk pinning Michael Guzman at 149.  Marshall Giovanni followed his lead and posted a pin over Nathan Wilson at 157.  Craig Jackson posted a solid 12-4 decision over Russell Lowellen.  At 174, Pano earned his first victory with a 7-5 decision over Frank Geiger.  Norman Orr continued his domination by pinning Benji Martin.  At 197, James Jensen lost a tough 11-10 decision to Tyler Bullington.  Jeremy Williams iced the meet with a fall at HWT.

The final score is Highline 31 Yakima 16 .

North Idaho Dual (Fri. Nov. 2, 2007 )
Highline wrestled an extremely close meet, even though the score didn’t reflect it.  Highline was down early as Kyle Heath was soundly defeated at 125.  That carried over into a forfeit at 133, until Brian Hirai makes the weight.  The match of the night was at 141.  Anthony Zender took on the number one ranked wrestler in the country in Chris Harris.  Zender completely outwrestled Harris and stunned the NIC crowd.  However, the referees refused to let him win waving off 3 different take-downs.  I’m confident that everyone in the gym thought Anthony won the match.  The final score was 8-7.  At 149, Chessjuan Monk was inside-tripped for 5, but then dominated the next 6 minutes, but still came up short falling 5-3.  Marshall Giovanni got Highline on the board with a solid victory defeating Jordan Anderson 12-7, and Craig Jackson came out in a sprint and pinned DJ May in the opening minute.  At 174, Pano Dreves was unable to mount enough offense to defeat Dino May and lost 3-1.  At 184, Norman Orr destroyed Ben Lecouire 15-0.  At 197, 184 pound James Jensen was pinned by Brett Fredrickson, as was Jeremy Williams at heavyweight.  Highline lost the meet, but it should be a lot different when NIC comes to Highline, and once the Thunderbirds iron out their line up.
