Action Item
b: Approval of the 2007-2008 Final
Budget
It was moved by Dr. Ed Davila to approve the 2007-2008 Final Budget. Dr. Elizabeth Chen seconded the motion.
The motion carried.
Action Item
a: Selection of search consultant firm
for presidential search process.
Rita Creighton stated that there have been a number of forums on the
campus to discuss the qualities and characteristics desired in the next college
president. She added that last week two
presentations were made to the Board of Trustees by representatives of presidential
search firms.
Rita Creighton said that based on information that the Board has
received via written materials, research, studying the proposals from the
search consultants, scoring the presentations and reviewing input from campus
groups last week, she believed that the Board was ready to make a selection.
Rita Creighton moved that the Board select the National Search &
Education Consulting Firm as Highline’s Consulting Firm.

The motion carried to select the National Search & Education
Consulting firm for the presidential search process.
Rita Creighton recognized the efforts of Patricia Overman for her
assistance in coordinating the search process.
She said that the next step would be to proceed with a contract. She indicated that Larry Yok would be
notifying the firms and would set up the procedures for the contractual
agreement. She said they would also be
looking at the make-up of the search committee; there would not be enough seats
on the committee for all those who would like to be involved, but it would need
to be a reasonable size to ensure appropriate representation.
STANDING REPORTS (continued)
Lydia Bracco reported.
Ruth Windhover reported.
Ruth Windhover wished to thank all those who are participating in the
meetings regarding the presidential search process. She expressed that the Faculty would like to
see a closure to this process and hoped for a speedy timeline.
Regarding statewide issues, she said that HCC wants to recruit the best
faculty available. While negotiation on
contracts is good relative to the system, the system itself is remarkably
underfunded. Ruth asked the members of
the Board of Trustees to impress upon the Legislature the need for salary
increases. Part-time faculty earn about
62% of what the pay grades are for full-time faculty. HCC has high standards with huge demands and
they produce. However, Ruth explained
that if HCC wishes this to continue, there is a need to maintain competitive
salaries. Ruth is on a compensation
study in this state and is working along with Fred Wong of
Faculty Senate
Ruth Frickle reported.
Ruth Frickle was introduced to the Board of Trustees. She teaches Psychology and has been a full
time faculty member, tenure-track for eight years. She was employed as a faculty member for
seven years prior to her tenure-track, and has been actively involved in
retention efforts. Ruth stated that the
Faculty Senate had their first meeting last week and would report during the
next meeting.
REPORTS
The Honors Program
Marie Zimmermann introduced Dr. Barbara Clinton. She is a member of the Speech Program and is
working full time with the Honors Program.
•
Dr. Clinton made a PowerPoint presentation to the
Board of Trustees entitled, “The Honors
Scholar Program: Education is not the Filling of the Pail, but the
Lighting of the Fire (Yeats).” Dr.
Clinton offered some statistics on those participating in the Scholars Program
which underscored the tremendous diversity in the program. She explained that there are many reasons
that young scholars are choosing to enter the community college system,
including the lower cost in comparison to 4-year institutions, and easy
access.

•
Highline also leads the

•
The diversity of HCC’s
Honors Scholar Program comes close to mirroring that of the college.
•
CRITICISM: Honors Programs are by their very nature
elitist and end up being groups dominated by high-achieving Caucasian females.
RESPONSE: The Honors Scholar Program serves a population that roughly mirrors
the demographics of the college.
•
Over 40% of our 2006
Honors 100 students reported themselves to be non-Caucasian. Additionally,
you'll note that about 1/3 of our Honors participants are male, similar to
college numbers.

•
A student who completes the Honors Scholar Program
with a 3.5 GPA will receive a merit tuition scholarship for the final
quarter at HCC and will be recognized
at graduation, as an "Honors Scholar." If students participate
in honors classes and/or acquire honors option credits but are unable to
complete the total requirements to graduate as an Honors Scholar, those credits
will still appear on transcripts as Honors work.
Dr. Clinton explained that 100% of the
Honors Program Scholars received some sort of scholarship. She also stated that she purposely shops for
college opportunities for students that will offer to support 100% of the
students’ needs.
