Approval of Minutes

Minutes of Board of Trustees’ Meeting, November 10, 2005 were approved.

 

Correspondence

·         Dr. Bell reported receiving a letter from MetLife Foundation, Jobs for the Future, congratulating Highline Community College on being named one of six finalists for the 2006 MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award.  This award is given to an institution for having a specific focus on evidence of institution-wide commitment to, and positive outcomes for, underrepresented populations.  All the finalists will be featured in brochures and publications on the exemplary strategies for service to under served populations and all finalists will be recognized at the April national AACC convention in Long Beach.  They will be making a site visit to Highline in January.  Thanks to Lisa Skari, Patty James, Jeff Wagnitz, and Kari Cantey for submitting the application and everyone at the College should be congratulated because this is an institution-wide effort of the College for diversity and acceptance.

Washington Public Employees Association

Gum Lai Ross reported.

  • The WPEA raffle for the Des Moines Food Bank will be held at the Faculty and Staff Holiday Lunch today.  Ed Morris, math faculty member, and Karen Steinbach and Siew Lai Lilley, Classified Staff members, will be assisting with the raffle.
  • The cookie sales campaign to fund scholarships for Classified Staff raised $1,033.40.  Staff members selling the tubs of cookies were Lois Eriksson, Gerie Ventura, Carolyn Sinay, Gary McCune, Lydia Bracco, Lauri Spivey, Carmelita Richardson, and Gum Lai Ross.  

 

Highline College Education Association

Ruth Windhover reported.

  • The Highline College Education Association election results for this year were as follows: Ruth remains President; Allan Walton remains Vice President and Chief Negotiator; Glen Avantaggio, Secretary; Bob Bonner, Treasurer.  The new officers will assume their duties in January.
  • The best practices for the employment of part time faculty task force made recommendations to the State Board at their Board’s December 1 meeting and those recommendations were approved.  The legislature discovered that now they have responsibility regarding these ten best practices which have a funding responsibility.  The State Board will take into account the best practices in their operating budget. 
  • A new campus activity has been initiated entitled the Highline Reads program.  The purpose of the activity is for the campus to decide on a book to read which is hoped that faculty, staff and members of the community will read followed by a number of activities surrounding the book.  The first book chosen to read is Fast Food Nation, the employment practices of compensation within the fast food industry where many of our students have worked, are working, or will be working in the fast food industry.  The book had been previously made available to the Board to read.  HCEA is making a contribution to the Highline Reads program by bringing a speaker to campus on or around the labor issues. 
  • HCEA will be sponsoring some kind of event around the issues of the necessity of a well paid labor force as part of the Defining Democracy activity held on campus each year.  The necessity in democracy is to have a well paid labor force that results in a well educated, literate, participatory middle class. 

 

Faculty Senate

Phil Droke reported.

  • The Senate has met twice this last week and is working on some changes having to do with graduation requirements for lab sciences.

AREA REPORTS

 
Instruction

Jack Bermingham reported.

  • A copy of the Fall 2005 CCID International News publication was distributed to the Board.  Several articles in the newsletter were highlighted: (1) the CCID sponsored Fulbright-Hays Group Experiences in South Africa and Namibia during the summer for Highline Community College; (2) CCID Professional Development Program with Highline’s partner institution in Japan, the Jikei Group, sponsored the Global Leadership program that two of our faculty will participate in this year, Ron Davidson from Computer Science and Jeff Ward from Business; (3) an article about the Polytechnic of Namibia celebrating its ten year anniversary recognizing Jack Bermingham’s contribution to Highline’s international outreach in establishing successful international partnerships.
  • Jack and a few others from Highline attended the December ACIIE meeting, one of the international groups of American Association of Community Colleges that focuses on intercultural communication.  This meeting gives an opportunity for colleges to meet directly with representatives of federal agencies that run international initiatives giving an opportunity to hear what direction funding sources are moving in and an opportunity to network with them.  The meeting also gives an opportunity to meet with some of the embassy representatives to maintain relationships with the College which is a challenge because people are periodically reassigned in foreign services of every country. 
  • In November the African Chamber of Commerce, a local business organization in the greater Seattle area, had its annual Africa day event in Seattle.  A number of colleges attended and Highline was one of the prominent co-sponsors along with Microsoft and Boeing.  One of the keynote speakers, a Vice President at Microsoft, was born in Tanzania and told his personal story of humble beginnings and how he came to Microsoft.  The keynote ambassador speaker at the event has a strong relationship with Highline.  The Namibian and South African ambassadors are relatively new and, since their predecessors established this visit to the Seattle area and had a relationship with Highline, have requested Highline to provide some assistance on dates to visit.
  • A date is being finalized for a Yangzhou University computer science engineering program representative to visit Highline which will probably be later spring. 
  • A group of WorkFirst students from the ESL class volunteered to help at the Des Moines Food Bank on November 22.  Seventeen students in the ESL division speak highly of the class content and the value of Highline’s ABE/ESL program.

 

General Administration

Marion Davis reported.

  • The Bookstore made available the book to purchase for the Highline Reads activity and is making a contribution to the activity by offering gift certificates from the Bookstore.  Randy Fisher, Manager of the Bookstore, has announced his retirement and will be leaving the College at the end of December.  He will be missed. 
  • Administrative Technology is working to get the computer firewall pieces in place so that off campus computer access for staff and faculty can continue to move forward.
  • HR and Financial Services are very busy with reporting as the yearend gets closer and getting ready to do the faculty and staff 1099 earnings reporting and the 1098 reporting for students to save some tax dollars.  Both are very large projects.
  • Institutional Research is working to complete analyzing the Noel-Levitz survey process data and will be reporting about mid-January. 

 

Institutional Advancement

Lisa Skari reported.

  • Highline is getting some great recognition nationally.  Three years ago Highline student, Donnie Schewendeman, was selected for the USA Today All American Academic Team, and Highline Alum, Junki Yoshida, was recognized as the AACC Outstanding Alumni.  Last year, Highline President Emeritus, Dr. Gordon, was recognized with the AACC Leadership Award and this year MetLife Foundation is recognizing Highline as one of the finalists with a specific focus on evidence of institution-wide commitment to, and positive outcomes for, underrepresented populations. 
  • Last week there was a front page story in the Federal Way Mirror about the Latino Night School project with Federal Way School District and the local service center.  The article mentioned the growth demands and that there are about 30 families on the waiting list.  This program started with readings from GED and Jeff Wagnitz and the folks from the ESL programs also brought in some of the other level ESL classes, Level 5 and 6.
  • Highline was one of five community colleges in the state of Washington listed in the national Hispanic Outlook on Higher Education of outstanding university and colleges, “doing a commendable job recruiting, retaining, educating and graduating Hispanics.”
  • The Community College Times promoted Highline’s Weekend College for how colleges were looking at ways to ease commuters’ gas costs.  This wasn’t the goal of the program, but Highline was the only community college in Washington mentioned in the article and did state that Weekend College was innovative. 
  • The College has received its largest bequest in the history of the College, $459,000, for the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST).  Coupled with current pledges, a total of $474,000 has been raised for MaST getting us closer to the $500,000 match for the state funding. 
  • Breeder’s Theater will be holding their winter play, Rescue, Inc., on February 1 at EB Foote Winery with all proceeds going to the Foundation.  The Board was invited to purchase tickets from Rod Stephenson.  The Breeder’s Theater is a community theater group and the playwright is Highline faculty member TM Sell, the music director is Highline staff member Nancy Warren, and the costume designer is Highline staff member Melissa Sell.  

 

Student Services

Ivan Gorne reported.

  • The Running Start Committee, composed of faculty and staff from Instruction and Student Services, organized a lunch on campus for all the high school Running Start counselors from surrounding districts to discuss issues surrounding Running Start.  A number of HCC faculty who work with Running Start students also attended the lunch.  It was a great first start to develop better relationships with Running Start counselors in the school districts. 
  • Marie Bruin leads the Women’s Programs on the Student Services side of WorkFirst and is in the Advancing Leadership Program in Federal Way.  She was honored to be selected from her class this year to speak at a breakfast preceding Phil Smart from Phil Smart Motors. 
  • An all day customer service workshop was held as part of Enrollment Management initiative for mostly Student Services staff but other staff members also attended.  The training resulted in a much better job of answering telephones and returning calls.
