of the Board of Trustees’ Meeting,

Priscilla
Bell introduced Marion Davis who will become the interim Vice President for Administration
in about a week.

The
College received a letter from Marjorie Shay,

On October
26 the College will be hosting the Washington State Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce business after hours social from
Paul Kalchik reported.
·
Student
Government is working on the upcoming candidate’s forum to be held on campus
with local candidates running for offices such as city of
·
Jared
Tarabochia attended his first meeting with the tenure committee.
·
Julian
Torres is working on “P3”, Parliamentary Procedure Party, which is a teaching club for leaders on
the process of parliamentary procedures and Robert’s Rules of Orders so they
can be better participants in the Associated Students Council meetings.
·
Huy
Pham is working on the Recycling Policy with Instructor Woody Moses who has
been supportive to students to implement the policy.
·
ASHCC
is working with Ivan Gorne on the designated space for the intercultural center
in building 6.
·
Student
Senator Alex Washka is working with the evening students and faculty to provide
services they may need by conducting a survey to accommodate those needs.
·
Paul
will be meeting with Representative Skip Priest next week to address student
issues.
·

Student Government is going to

Classified
staff attended a customer service telephone techniques workshop hosed by Associate
Dean for Enrollment Services, Becky Riverman, on October 11.

WPEA district meeting is October 18 at

Highline’s
Professional Development Day is

WPEA
will be conducting the annual food drive for the Des Moines Food Bank including
the raffle for the food drive at the December Holiday Staff luncheon.
·
Job
representative chairperson, Gerald Jackson, has been working collaboratively to
resolve some current challenges due to the interpretation of the new contract
which was effective July 1.
·
The
classified staff training for technical and community colleges will be November
11, 2005 hosted by
·
A
farewell gift was presented to Laura Saunders and thanks from the classified
staff were extended to her for her contributions to Highline.
Ruth Windhover reported.
·
On
behalf of HCEA, Ruth expressed appreciation and thanks to Laura Saunders in her
role as the chief negotiator on the bargaining team for the College. She said Laura has been a source of support,
cooperation, information, and encouragement for faculty.
·
HCEA
is continuing dialog with the administration addressing faculty issues as they
arise.
·
Campus
Equity Week, a national week of recognition and appreciation to honor the
contributions of part time faculty sponsored by a coalition of the National
Education Association and other organizations will be October 31-November
4. During that week, a day will be
designated by the Governor as part time faculty appreciation day in
·
Ruth
will be the faculty representative on the screening committee for the
replacement of Earl Hale, Executive Director of the State Board. Charlie Earl, Everett Community College
President is the WACTC representative and Mike Emerson will be the trustee
representative on the committee.

The
Senate met and plans to review and bring up to date some of the documents that were
generated more than four to six years ago including statements on ethics.
·
Phil
is the Faculty Association of Community and Technical College (FACTC)
representative for Highline. FACTC will
be having their conference this year at Highline on October 27-28 with over 100
people registered to date from all over the state. They will be discussing working with diverse
students in classroom settings.

Trip to
Marie
Zimmermann, Dean of Instructional Resources, reported that Highline's second Fulbright
grant gave a group of faculty and staff the opportunity to travel to
Mary Barclay,
Director of the Puget Sound Early Start Program, Joan Graham, Education Instructor,
Bob Baugher, Psychology Instructor, Emanuel Chiabi, History Instructor, Ruth
Windhover, Writing Instructor, gave the report about the experiences they had
on the trip. On June 27 the group from
Highline, Central Washington University and the school districts left to work
in support of Highline Community College’s strategic mission, enriching the College
climate with diverse and global perspectives and strengthening and expanding
the college’s presence and roll in the community. The opportunity to spend a month living and
learning together in South Africa and Namibia gave the grant recipients
experiences that have informed and enriched their understanding of people,
their lives, their histories, and their perspectives on the world. They developed relationships with people in
those countries and their students will be the beneficiaries of their
experiences. They said that they will teach
differently with new perspectives and now have contacts that have become their
students' contacts. Their students are
already involved in partnerships and learning experiences with people the
instructors met this summer in
Lisa Skari reported.
· Highline is sponsoring the Federal Way Women’s Network Forum on October 26, which is an event planned by the Federal Way Chamber.
· Special thanks to Michael Allan for referring Chuck & Lisa Tuman, real estate agents in Burien, to the Foundation. They have joined the Foundation Board and yesterday was their first board meeting.
· Alana Young was hired as the program coordinator for the Foundation. She’s a Highline and CWU alum and has skills in special events planning and will be working on the gala.

Student
Services staff not only assist students but they also teach classes. Several staff members teach the College 100
course including Becky Riverman, Laura Westergard, Toni Castro, Yoshiko
Hardin-Abe, Natasha Burrows and Fred Capestany.
·
Highline
is participating in a dual enrollment conference on articulation of programs assisting
students transferring from high school to Highline to the baccalaureate level.
·
Ivan’s
direct report staff toured the remodel of the old bookstore space in building 6. This space is going to be remodeled to add
space for services for international student programs, ABE/ESL, Phi Theta Kappa,
interview rooms for Employments Services and college recruiters, and will
include the new concept for an intercultural center.

Recognition
was extended to Chris Gan, a new faculty member in Biology, who took the lead on
the summer camp at the MaST referred to by the letter Dr. Bell discussed under
Correspondence praising the program. The
Biology department is talking about how to repeat the program next year and
whether it should be run longer or if there should be more sessions.
·
Special
recognition was given to Kathleen Hasselblad and the work that she does in
Instruction’s international programs and her work on the Fulbright program this
summer. She often does the major part of
the grant writing or pulling information together for the grant submittal and
completes reporting when the grants are completed. She also stepped in and did a huge part of
the implementation of this Fulbright project.

The
Nursing Program was visited by a National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission
team and was given a verbal report that they would recommend a full eight year
accreditation. A formal written
confirmation of the accreditation recommendation has not arrived to date. Barbara Smith, Nursing Program Coordinator,
and Kathy Oberg, the Division Chair, deserve special recognition for the energy
they put into this site visit. The
entire nursing faculty and a couple of support staff spent a lot of time this
summer completing the final report.

Laura Saunders
reported.
·
This
was Laura's last meeting as a member of the Highline staff and she said that a
lot has changed in 15 years when she started at Highline and some things have
remained the same that are really important indicating the strength of
Highline. One strength is there is the
very strong faculty/administration relationship which was here 15 years ago and
is stronger now with a mutual respect for each other and working together
collaboratively. The infrastructure that
is needed for the campus is strong with a good team. She gave recognition to her direct reports in
Administrative Services: Marion Davis, who will be taking over as Interim Vice
President for Administration; Dennis Colgan, Administrative Technology; Patty
James, Institutional Research; Lorna Ovena and the HR office; Randy Fisher, Bookstore;
Richard Fisher, Security; Pete Babington, Facilities; Connie Johnson, who
worked first as her assistant and has now taken on the responsibility for the
property management function. Laura said
that it’s a great team with very capable people. She has enjoyed working with the Board and
administration and her colleagues in Executive Staff, and President Bell.
The trustees told
Laura that they have enjoyed working with her at Highline, will miss her,
thanked her for her leadership as the Vice President for Administration, and
wished her well at
Dr. Bell extended
her best wishes to Laura and complemented her leadership and contributions to
the College to make this a great place for students to learn and a great place
for faculty and staff to work and she will be missed. There will be a farewell for Laura on October
20 at the
None.
