Strategic Initiatives 

For each initiative, we have established realistic activities that describe the work to be accomplished to fully realize our strategic initiatives.

Strategic Initiative 1

Create a College climate that attracts,
welcomes, enrolls, and retains students.

Activities:

The College will create an orientation and
advising program that promotes student success.

Tasks

  • Implement an orientation program that will be attended by most full time students.
  • Develop a means to ìlinkingî students & faculty that have common educational interests.
  • Increase interaction among students and faculty centered around their common interests.
  • Use technology to provide ready access to advising information.

The College will create and enhance a student-centered College.

Tasks

  • Identify sources of student satisfaction and dissatisfaction with Highline.
  • Develop and implement a plan to remove the barriers to student satisfaction and success.
  • Add services and educational programs requested and needed by students.
  • Eliminate services and educational programs no longer needed or used by students.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary instruction.
  • Emphasize integrated and active learning.
  • Continually assess effectiveness of delivery services to students.
  • Develop a review process (criteria) for evaluating services.
  • From evaluation criteria create, substitute or eliminate delivery services.
  • Foster innovation in course delivery and course content.

The College will create an outreach program with
special emphasis on recruiting high school students.

Tasks

  • Increase awareness of the College and its programs in area high schools.
  • Encourage juniors and seniors and their parents to choose Highline when planning their college future.
  • Host visitations by high school students and counselors.
  • Encourage and support Running Start and high school enhancement programs.
  • Develop Tech Prep options in cooperation with public schools.
  • Integrate the World of Work Pathways into Highline's occupational plan.

The College will offer a friendly, welcoming atmosphere with efficient services and effective programs to all who call or come to the campus.

Tasks

  • Create and implement a training program of positive "customer" relations for employees-student centered thinking.
  • Reduce unnecessary procedures and apply automated methods to reduce routine, repetitive tasks.
  • Implement touch-tone telephone registration.
  • Provide e-mail and library access for students, faculty, and staff from campus public stations (in the library, labs, etc.) and from home and office.
  • Extend computer access to students applying for financial aid to reduce processing time and improve accuracy.
  • Provide a level of technology support and training for employees.

The College will continue emphasis on career programs and employment services, including vocational education, workforce training, and retraining.

Tasks

  • Create and request funding for new occupational programs for workforce training.
  • Assist laid-off and unemployed workers through specialized workforce training programs.
  • Create a campus-wide employment and career service delivery plan.
  • Create a co-location, one-stop center in cooperation with Employment Security.
  • Develop partnerships with businesses to support specific programs.
  • Expand opportunities for cooperative education.

The College will expand its Continuing Education programs.

Tasks

  • Expand the number and variety of business, technology, and personal enrichment classes.
  • Develop professional development opportunities for community members.
  • Expand our efforts to provide customized training.

Strategic Initiative 2

Expand visibility and involvement of the College
with the community.

Activities:

The College will create and implement a program to provide
a consistent high-quality presence in the community.

Tasks

  • Enhance and improve publications available to community members.
  • Increase the number of newspaper articles about the College in local media.
  • Develop an effective Web Site to provide a consistent and reliable message about the College to external users.
  • Form partnerships with local businesses and local labor unions to help meet their training needs for the 21st century.
  • Form partnerships with public schools and other educational organizations to help address common needs and achieve common goals for the 21st century.
  • Improve signage in the area near the College so those on I-5 and Pacific Highway will know where Highline is located.
  • Improve signage in the area near Federal Way to make the College easier to locate.
  • Encourage staff and faculty to participate in community events, groups, etc.
  • The College will increase resources available from the community.

    Tasks

    • Support increased activity of the Foundation for raising funds; i.e. scholarships and other support.
    • Build relationships and partnerships that increase our community support.
    • Involve alumni in program support.

    The College will implement a broad-based, extensive,
    legislative information program on an ongoing basis.

    Tasks

    • Provide legislators and candidates with current, accurate, and positive information about the College.
    • Host College visits by legislators, candidates, and legislative aides.
    • Provide opportunities for legislators to hear from successful Highline students.
    • Provide ìphoto opportunitiesî for legislators at Highline.

    The College will maintain strong institutional and
    personal relationships with community leaders.

    Tasks

    • Increase the number of campus visits by community leaders to learn about the services and achievements of the College.
    • Promote stories and articles in community publications about successful students and alumni and relevance of programs.
    • Increase community contacts through attendance at local chambers of commerce, civic organizations, and political sub-divisions.

    The College will develop a marketing strategy to determine
    the needs, wants, and interests of its consumers.

    Tasks

    • Form a campus group (Marketing Team) to coordinate the College's marketing efforts.
    • Locate and obtain professional marketing advice as needed.
    • Deliver services and programs to meet community satisfaction that preserve and enhance the consumer's and society's well being and long term interests.
    • Consider formation of a Marketing/Institution Research advisory position.

    Strategic Initiative 3

    Create a College climate that values diversity and
    enhances global perspectives.

    Activities:

    The College will incorporate an understanding and appreciation
    of the diversity of our nation and local community.

    Tasks

    • Incorporate global perspectives on the cultural differences into our normal activities, classes, and business practices.
    • Implement diversity training for employees that contributes to a positive College climate.
    • Encourage faculty to expand the diversity content of their classes.
    • Increase the number of underrepresented students of color.
    • Increase the number of administrators, faculty, and staff of color.
    • Incorporate diversity and global awareness into the regularly scheduled professional development activities for administrators, faculty, and staff.
    • Strengthen programs which contribute to the success of all students including students of color and students with disabilities.

    The College will consider adopting separate College
    outcomes for diversity and global perspectives.

    Tasks

    • Clarify the existing College outcomes on appreciating diversity.
    • Consider modifying College graduation requirements to achieve these College outcomes.
    • Build new curriculum that will support diversity and global understanding.

    The College will construct the institutional infrastructure
    to support an internationalization of the College.

    Tasks

    • Develop consortia relationships with Colleges that will advance Highline's international efforts.
    • Expand our partnership with LCP to include three-way partnerships when appropriate.
    • Integrate diversity goals with marketing efforts, ensuring that the community knows of the resources and global perspectives of Highline.
    • Create a global studies resource center.

    The College will increase significantly the number of international students over the next five years and will implement a systematic program that promotes interaction among international and native students.

    Tasks

    • Recruit international students from throughout the world to achieve a reasonable balance of international students from each of the continents.
    • Form a partnership to offer an intensive English language program and facilitate student transfers to Highline Community College.
    • Promote community understanding that international students enhance global perspectives of native students.
    • Build exchange programs with colleges of other nations that will broaden our relationships and visibility abroad.
