Joseph Burnett learned at Highline Community College that he had the potential to transfer to a first-rate university or college. Now he’s studying at one of the top universities in the United States.
A former U.S. marine who discovered a love of photography while posted in East Timor, Joseph started at Highline without knowing there was a difference between a community college and a four-year school.
He learned the language of education and how to achieve more than he ever imagined with the help of Highline's Honors Scholar program and program coordinator Barbara Clinton.
"The Honors Scholar program and Barbara Clinton helped me to set higher goals and achieve them by showing me what was possible and by tough love and tougher assignments," said Burnett.
"My investment in time and money has paid off 1,000 percent."

In early 2008, he was named a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship winner, a national award that provides up to $30,000 a year for up to three years of educational expenses.
Burnett now attends Tufts University
with the plan to major in computer science.
"The Honors Scholar program changed my educational outlook," Joseph said.
"It convinced me that it was worthwhile and possible to pursue top schools."
