  • Highline Receives NSF Grant

The National Science Foundation awarded a grant of $599,968 to Highline Community College for support of the "Science Scholars Program (SSP)," under the direction of  Tina Ostrander, Eric Baer, Gregory Reinemer, Jeff Owens, and  Robert
    Embrey.

This grant provides scholarships to students pursuing degrees in any of the following areas: Astronomy, Biology, Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Marine Science, Oceanography, or Physics.

Please tell students about the scholarships – up to $5265 per year. Awards are ongoing and will be made in Fall Quarter to eligible students!  (12 credits, eligible for financial aid, pursuing any Pure and Applied Science degree, 2.5 GPA). Any degree path is okay.  It does not have to be a transfer degree. Use the attached file to print applications for distribution.  Note: It is a FERPA violation to ask students if they are receiving financial aid when in a group setting.

    Blackboard Upgraded

In September, Highline upgraded to the latest version of Blackboard. The new version adds a bunch of cool features, but also is different in some important ways. Key differences can be found on the Bb7 FAQ at http://flightline.highline.edu/blackboard/bb7.html.

If you are an instructor using Blackboard, please refer to the attached message, which is the latest update of the messages sent to the Blackboard Announcements email list. Workshops for instructors are still available -see http://flightline.highline.edu/blackboard for details.

If you experience any errors, difficulties, gobbledygook, or general weirdness in the new version, please let us know immediately at ichelp@highline.edu  with as much information as possible, including what you were doing at the time,  the URL on which you received the error and screen shots if you can.

If you have more questions or would like to request Fall quarter courses, please see http://flightline.highline.edu/blackboard/

    Justice Comes to Highline

The Washington Supreme Court will be visiting Highline Community College on May 5 and 6, 2008.  The first day of the visit is time for the court to visit classes and  meet with students, faculty, Board of Trustees and Foundation members, and the community, depending on the schedule.

The second day of the visit is when the Supreme Court will be hearing actual cases throughout the day.  The sessions will be open to the campus and the public. We have been working with Justice Tom Chambers for the past 6 months to try and make this happen. The court usually visits four year schools, two or so a year.  It is a unique honor and opportunity to have them come to Highline.

    Polysomnographic Online Courses

The Linn-Benton Community College (Albany, OR) board has just approved a new program. The Polysomnographic Technology Program will train students to work with sleep physicians to help patients with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. The program will include online lectures, hands-on practice in a laboratory setting and patient contact in a clinical practicum.

The program will be designed for up to 20 students, full-time and over three quarters. The course will be accredited by the Association of Polysomnographic Technologists and online courses will be through Highline Community College.
It will begin in the spring of 2008.

    Dartmouth and Whitman Visit HCC

    During the summer a number
    of elite private schools began
to take an interest in our
    Honors Program and its students.

Several elite schools expressed  enough interest that they asked to come to our campus to visit with students and to talk about admission to elite schools.

Dartmouth visited on Sept. 17, and Whitman was here on Sept 25.  Swarthmore is coming toward the end of October, and Williams, Amherst, and Middlebury may visit as well.
