This
year Highline will make a significant addition to
the college—the new Marine Science and Technology
(MaST) Center. Dedicated to marine science
education, research, and community outreach, the
Center will create a one-of-a-kind facility that
brings together science education, biological
research, and community outreach, all under one
roof.
The
Highline Community College Foundation is undertaking
its first ever capital campaign, which will upgrade
the facility and secure programs for the MaST
Center.
The
campus campaign goal is to raise $50,000 and to
dedicate the marine lab at the MaST center after the
faculty and staff of 2007/2008. There are many
payment options to consider. How about having your
name added to a glass tile on the donor wall at the
Center for less than a latte a day?
By
contributing to the MaST Center, you will invest in
our students, the community, its people, and the
environmental health of Puget Sound. Revitalizing
the MaST Center is an ambitious—yet
achievable—project to bring marine science
education, research, and outreach to this region
like never before.
Do
you love numbers and the stories they can tell? Have
you done your own Highline research and want to
share your findings? Do you long to discuss
regression methods in a safe, supportive
environment? Are you interested in finding out more
about Highline’s data and how it can be useful?
If any or all of
these answers is “YES!” then join the Dataheads!
The Dataheads meet
monthly to discuss methodological issues of research
and ways to promote the culture of evidence on
campus. We meet the last Friday of the month from 11
am - 12:30 pm starting November 30. Meetings are
held in the Faculty Resource Center.

Highline
Community College was awarded a U.S.
Department of Education grant to strengthen its
international business program and support
training opportunities for small and medium size
businesses, promoting import and export trade
with China.

International Business Education and Training:
Creating Connections with Yangzhou, China."
Highline Community College hosted the annual conference of ICEED
(International Consortium for Educational and
Economic Development) in Seattle, October 17-20.
Founded in the early 1990's, the ICEED group is
composed of educators from Canada, Mexico and the
United States who work together to improve
tri-lateral cooperation and partnering in community,
cultural, educational and economic development. All
ICEED conferences are bilingual and feature
simultaneous translation in English and Spanish.
Highline has been a member since 2003.
HCC
campus safety officers changed their uniforms from
the paramilitary police uniforms to the informal
sport look to remind the campus community that our
safety staff is just that, here to help students,
staff, and faculty maintain a safe environment. The
old uniforms suggested that they had police powers
and may have led people to think they were police
officers. We believe the new uniforms more
accurately symbolize the safety officers’ role.
The
HCC Library Exhibits and Art Gallery, located on the
fourth floor, will be exhibiting Surrogate
Travelers, digital travel photography by Bruce and
Patricia Overman, November 10-30. The photographs
are for sale and the proceeds will go to the
Foundation’s Library fund.
Sharon Hashimoto received the Exemplary
Status Award at the conference of the Washington
State Community and Technical College Humanities
Association on October 19, 2007.
Toni Castro has been awarded the 2007
National Association of Student Personnel
Administrators (NASPA) Scott Goodnight Award.
