  • Achieving the Dream Update

Highline's Achieving the Dream initiative will submit a draft implementation proposal to its program coaches this week.  The proposal includes changes to the developmental math and ESL programs to increase student retention and success.  The final draft of the proposal will be submitted at the end of May.  Highline is eligible to receive $100,000 per year for the next four years   to support these ongoing changes.

    Highline's Nursing Department Receives Grant

Our Nursing Department members under the leadership of Barbara Smith wrote a successful Promise of Nursing proposal for “Simulation & Community–Based Learning for Clinical Nursing Education” and was awarded $25,000.  The funds will be used for a simulated manikin that will increase student's opportunities for practicing clinical skills.

This grant was part of $225,000 raised from the J&J “Promise of Nursing for Washington” gala held in March.  These grants were issued after an RFP process for which all approved nursing programs in Washington state were eligible.  Only proposals that would increase the numbers of nurses were considered, with an emphasis on innovation and increasing the numbers of RN’s and underrepresented/minority nurses.  The reviewers were all active members of the “Promise” Steering Committee that supported the event and raised funds for nursing in our state.

    Gangs in Federal Way?

Gang activity is a symptom of youth in crisis

Advancing Leadership is seeking partners for an ongoing effort to create awareness and be proactive with prevention.  You are invited to join the Advancing Leadership Board of Directors and other  community stakeholders for a meeting on gang behavior and how to understand and counteract the harmful influence.  This forum will provide an overview from local authorities and examples of proactive solutions in other communities so we can work toward resistency in Federal Way.

Human Powered Paper Vehicle Competition Winners

Congratulations to Rich Bankhead and his ENGR 290 students - they swept the competition AGAIN this year at the 11th annual Human Powered Paper Vehicle competition at EWU.  These students worked very hard and the efforts produced outstanding results, improving on last year's impressive record of winning 3 out 6 awards to take 4 out of 6 this year!  Highline has set the standard the past two years and is now the confirmed college to beat in future competitions.

The event is sponsored by two NSF grants the college has received, the Engineering Scholarship Program and the Northwest Engineering Talent Expansion Partnership, which support recruiting and retention in the Engineering department.
