Highline Receives Funds for Access to Nursing Program |
Highline Community College received funding from the State Board of Washington Community and Technical Colleges to develop and deliver an Access to Nursing Program. Access to Nursing (AN) is a pre-nursing project that will provide academic content and skills preparation to enable at least 20 ethnically diverse, disadvantaged nursing personnel from local long-term care facilities to be successful in nursing prerequisites. Minorities, immigrants and those who have traditionally been left behind will benefit from this program as their opportunities increase to attain high-skill, high-wage jobs. Highline has partnered with Masonic Retirement Center, Wesley Homes and Judson Park to develop a customized bridge curriculum to enhance academic preparation and increase retention of incumbent workers. This curriculum will combine basic skills mastery with the integration of work-based learning experiences that build students’ competence and confidence. AN partners will identify and select participants based on eligibility requirements. They will assist with curriculum development, workplace oversight, and will offer their facilities and staff to assist with the project. The project will enroll 20 students. This project relies upon the experience and expertise of Highline faculty and staff who are committed to the College's initiatives related to promoting writing and math across the curriculum; enhancing reading, ESL and ABE instruction; and supporting academic success through mentoring, tutoring, career counseling, and outcomes assessment. In addition, the three long-term care facilities are prepared to allow two hours of release time per week for each employee/student participant. The three-quarter project is currently in the development stage. The actual delivery of the program is scheduled to begin winter quarter, 2005. |

National Science Foundation Funds Promote
The Northwest Engineering Talent Expansion Partnership (NW-ETEP) is a $2,000,000 National Science Foundation funded partnership between Highline Community College and other Washington colleges and universities including the University of Washington, Seattle University and Seattle Central Community College. The goal of the project is to promote engineering education and increase the number of engineering graduates in the State of Washington by 10% over the next five years, while increasing the number of women graduates by 20% and the number of under-represented minorities by 100%. To achieve this, Highline Community College will hire an on-site coordinator to work closely with engineering, math and science faculty and other campus staff to support engineering students. Highline will receive $275,000 to fund the position and support services including tutoring, student events and travel. In addition, this grant will complement our current National Science Foundation Engineering Scholars Program, a $400,000 scholarship program for students completing their Associate of Science degree with the intent to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering. NW-ETEP is just one example of
how the faculty and staff at Highline Community College are working hard
to provide excellence in teaching and learning. |

FALL TRAINING EVENT

Using Mediation to Resolve Conflict
Wednesday, Nov
10th Sometimes two individuals or groups find themselves at an impasse, where they just cannot get past a certain issue or situation. Despite best efforts from both sides to resolve the issue, things never seem to go right leading to blame, frustration, and anger. Once trust between parties has eroded, solving the problem can seem an impossibility and even the thought of dealing with the issue can provoke stress and despair. Come to our Fall Training Event and find out how mediation can help resolve these and other conflicts.
What
can a mediator do for you? Come see first hand how mediation works! The Benton Franklin Dispute Resolution Center will provide this opportunity to see a conflict acted out before you. This Training Event is being sponsored jointly by the Highline WPEA and your Classified Staff Training Committee. All Highline Employees are encouraged to attend this valuable presentation. Refreshments will be provided. |

WPEA Elects Officers |
Officers are elected every two years and start their term of office in October. Most of the committee positions are by election; a few are by appointment, and some are held by officers as part of the fulfillment of their position. Committee Chairs are elected by their committee members. Currently the Endowment, Web, Elections, and Fundraiser Committee members are by appointment from Michelle Tuscher’s term of office; they are considered special committees (1-year term or appointed as needed).
