Highline Reaches Out on Professional Development Day

Staff Training for Technical and Community Colleges representatives from Bates Technical, Clover Park Technical, Green River CC, Olympic CC, Pierce CC, and Tacoma CC have been invited to join us for this year’s Professional Development Day.  This is our chance to show our neighbors the special spirit of Highline and our commitment to professional development, as well as increase our state wide-visibility.  We will be joined by Catherine Rabold from Green River CC and look forward to having others sign up.

Highline’s STTACC representative, Michelle Tuscher, teamed up with Dr. Bell and the Professional Development Day Committee Chair, Pat Daniels, to extend this invitation to our neighboring colleges.

Making A World of Difference

The Washington State Employees Combined Fund Drive (CFD) provides you with the opportunity to help other less fortunate individuals within our local communities.

The CFD campaign kicked-off on the Highline campus on September 30th.

Mark McKay, campus Campaign Coordinator, is hoping that we can again increase our annual amount as we have the past two years, and has set a goal for this year to $15,000 as compared to the $11,780 of last year.

Through the ease of payroll deductions, full time college employees can give to over 1700 different charities listed in the CFD booklet or on the website: http://hr.dop.wa.gov/cfd/contents.htm .  If you don't see your selected charity, you can write one in, if you know the charities tax ID numbers.

If you have questions, call the Office of Resource Development at ext. 3774.

Depressed Students Should be Referred to Campus Resources

Did you know that about 15% of college students have symptoms of depression and about 10 percent come to campus with a history of depression?

If you notice students who appear to be losing weight, having trouble sleeping and losing interest in things they once thought were enjoyable and interesting, you may want to refer them to the Student Development Center to see a counselor, or to Access Services. Students who are in college are faced with a number of stressors that they may have never dealt with before, including concern over finances, having to make new friends, a tougher academic schedule and worry about life after graduation.

The following are signs of depression:

 Poor performance in school
 Withdrawal from friends and activities

Sadness and hopelessness

Lack of Enthusiasm, energy or motivation

Anger and rage

Overreaction to criticism

Feelings of being unable to satisfy ideals

Poor self-esteem or guilt

Indecision, lack of concentration or forgetfulness

Restlessness and agitation

Changes in eating or sleeping patterns

Substance abuse

Problems with authority

National Depression Screening Day is October 8th.  The Student Development Center will have information pertaining to depression and screening for depression available in building 2 from 9 AM to 2 PM.  Please announce this opportunity to become more informed about depression to your students.

Note: Some of the information contained in this article was extrapolated from the Disability Compliance for Higher Education newsletter Oct. 2003.
