Local Communities Partner with Highline Community College to Open a Small Business Assistance Center

Highline Community College is pleased to announce the opening of the Small Business Assistance Center (SBAC), a new resource center open to local small and medium sized businesses in SW King County. The SBAC is a cooperative partnership with the cities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac and Tukwila, the Port of Seattle, Highline Community College and King County to support and provide resources to assist SW King County entrepreneurs grow and/or sustain their businesses, create and retain jobs and enhance the economic base of the area.

The Small Business Assistance Center will offer free, confidential, one-on-one counseling and business advisory services with a business development specialist on issues such as expanding, stabilizing, selling or buying a business venture, business planning, improving marketing techniques/efforts, analyzing financial data and information, and or starting a business that is past the pre-development stage. In addition, it will provide access to business resources, research, lenders/financing, and workshops/training.

Entrepreneurs can receive assistance in developing a business plan, marketing strategy and/or pricing strategy, identifying and solving costing, debt, and compensation problems, gathering market research, identifying industry trends, valuing a small business for sale or purchase, analyzing costs, developing personnel policies and procedures, gaining information about SBA loan packages, and facilitation of regional and/or global expansion and growth.

Business Development Specialist, Jennifer Shelton, brings 10 years of business development and communication experience to HCC.  She comes from one of the nation’s top ten small business development centers where she counseled and worked with small business owners and entrepreneurs including start-up enterprises, contributing to over $9.5 million in loans and new equity investment and the creation of over 500 jobs in Whatcom County in 2002. She holds an MBA from Western Washington University and has previously opened and managed a successful retail business.

Nancy Warren, piano (and staff member) with Kellyn Haley, trombone, present "A Harmonic Convergence" on Sunday, March 30, 2pm, HCC, building 7. All proceeds benefit the Highline Community College Foundation Scholarship program and the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra international tour to Peru. Suggested donation $10 adults/$5 students.

The 90 minute program includes music from the Baroque through Contempory periods. Ms. Warren received her Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Puget Sound and has performed throughout the state of Washington. Ms. Haley recently received her Master's degree in Trombone performance from Yale University and has performed nationally.

LARGE CROWD EXPECTED AT FREE CPR SATURDAY

As many as 500 participants are expected to attend CPR Saturday on March 22, 2003, a day of free classes hosted by Highline Community College in conjunction with the American Red Cross. The daylong event includes five classes where community members can learn lifesaving CPR skills and earn CPR certification at no charge by attending one of the 2.5-hour-long sessions.  Classes will be held at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Buildings 2, 3 and 7 on Highline’s main campus. Space is limited. Participants can register by calling 206-726-3534 or visiting www.seattleredcross.org . Approximately 25 to 50 volunteers from the American Red Cross, the Highline Community College Safety Committee, Highline’s Student Government, and the WorkSafe Institute of Washington will conduct the sessions and assist participants.  The free event is made possible by Red Cross volunteers and several local business sponsors: Highline Community College, Medtronic, Safeway, Seattle Storm and Valco Graphics, Inc.

The Health Awareness Committee Receives Grant

The Health Awareness Committee has recently secured a $2,499 grant from the Seattle and King County Public Health Department.  This money will be used to enhance our tobacco prevention and awareness efforts on campus.  The committee, among other things, is in the process of developing a smoking policy for Highline Community College.  For more information, contact Eric Blanchard or Stefan Alano.
