Highline Hosted Delegation from South Africa
by Kathleen Hasselblad

Highline Community College hosted a six member delegation from Cape Technikon, Cape Town, South Africa and a three person delegation from the Polytechnic of Namibia last month.  Both groups came under the auspices of three of the College’s USAID International Higher Education Partnership grants.

While here, the Cape Technikon group worked with the Faculty Resource Center staff and Highline’s Gateway faculty on approaches to student success and retention.  Cape Technikon, like Highline, is engaging in a concerted effort to improve student pass and completion rates.

They are also initiating a pilot project in their Engineering program that will provide students with a basic understanding of entrepreneurship and the skills necessary to succeed in the business world. As is true in the Pacific Northwest, most employment and economic activity in South Africa occurs in small to medium sized businesses.  If students have some basic business tools, they will be better positioned to engage in successful business operations.

Ed Morris and James Peyton of the FRC spent considerable time working with the Cape Technikon group to further define their projects.  As important, HCC faculty and staff learned from their South African counterparts different approaches to working with a diverse student population.

The delegation from the Polytechnic worked closely with Highline’s Center for Extended Learning.  The Polytechnic designed, staffed, and started up a Center for Entrepreneurial Development in part with USAID grant funding through Highline.  Steve Fenton, Krissy Hatcher, Molly Brasfield, and Alana Morrison introduced the group to the full range of CEL outreach, program design, and contract training activities.

Not only did they take part in a range of CEL activities while here, they met with staff from neighboring community colleges to get a sense of how they do contract training, community outreach, and costing out of programs. They were particularly interested in the collaboration Highline has with other community colleges and with the business community.

Thanks to Virg Staiger, who acted as tour guide for a day, they got to see more than conference rooms, computer screens, and white boards.  He took them to Pike Place Market, Seattle Center, and a shopping mall.  Other HCC faculty and staff also provided home cooked meals, off hours conversation, and warm hospitality.

Highline Receives 2002 Western States Communication Association Model Teaching Program Award

The Western State Communication Association invited nominations for the "Model Speech Communication Program" in two-year colleges nationwide. We used our department notebook materials from the assessment process, along with letters from administrators and students, to submit our nomination. As you can see from the letter, the award is based on the depth and breadth of the discipline represented in the curriculum, the quality and preparation of the faculty, the assessment program, and co-curricular activities. In some years, they give more than one award, but this year our HCC Speech Communication program is the sole recipient for the nation. This is a department award. Every single speech instructor, full and part-time, deserves kudos for the department's success.

2003-2004 Foundation Scholarships

The Foundation at Highline Community College will be increasing scholarship funding for the 2003-2004 academic year to $82,300, which is a significant increase over last year’s $55,000 that was awarded.

A number of new scholarships are in the packet including a $4,000 scholarship that is the largest individual scholarship ever awarded by the Foundation.  First time students entering Highline can apply for many of the scholarships.  Some are strictly for our current students.  Approximately 750 applications are mailed to high schools in Highline’s service area.  The packet can also be accessed on the Foundation’s web page: www.funds4highline.org.

Applications will be available on campus commencing February 20th and may be picked up at the Foundation Office, Student Government Office, and the Financial Aid Office.  If you have questions call: 870-3774.
