The Honorable Sheila Violet Makate Sisulu, South African Ambassador to the U.S., was appointed South Africa's Ambassador to the United States by then President Nelson Mandela in 1999. Previously, she served her country in a variety of capacities. After the country's first democratic elections in 1994, Ambassador Sisulu became Special Advisor to the Minister of Education. She was appointed Consul-General at the South African Consulate-General in New York in 1997.

Ambassador Sisulu will be speaking on the latest on South Africa prospects for U.S. Business at the Offices of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce on Monday, October 28, form 8-9:30 a.m.  This is presented by the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle and Highline Community College.

At noon, she will be on campus and give a presentation in building 7.  There will also be a reception for her at 4 p.m. in building 2.

Medical Benefits Plans

Medical costs have increased tremendously this past year, which will raise the overall cost of providing health care to state and higher-education employees by an average of 20 percent in 2003. To save printing and mailing costs, you will not automatically receive an open enrollment booklet as has been the practice in the past.  For more information on medical cost changes, you are encouraged to go to www.pebb.hca.wa.gov, or call 1-866-577-2793 to request a booklet.

Foundation’s New Web page

The Foundation at Highline Community College is jumping into the arena of “on-line” fundraising and is in the initial stages of creating a new website: www.funds4highline.org.

The Foundation has hired Carestech, Inc. and created a partnership with them for developing and hosting the site.

In addition, through Bank of America e-Stores the Foundation in the very near future will be able to accept on-line credit card donations using VISA, MasterCard and American Express and eventually direct monthly transfers from individual’s checking accounts and automatic monthly pledge payments from credit cards.

The website will soon allow students to fill out Foundation scholarship applications and submit electronically.  Check us out as the site is up and working, and if you have comments please call Mark McKay, extension 3446.

Caring for your Community

The Washington State Employees Combined Fund Drive (CFD) provides you with the opportunity to help other less fortunate individuals within our local communities.

The CFD campaign kicked-off on the Highline campus on October 7th.

Mark McKay, campus Campaign Coordinator is hoping that we can again increase our annual amount as we have the past two years, and has set a goal for this year of $15,000 as compared to the $11,566 of last year.

Through the ease of payroll deductions, full time college employees can give to over 1700 different charities listed in the CFD booklet or on the website: http://hr.dop.wa.gov/cfd/contents.htm, or if you don’t see your selected charity, you can write one in.

If you need help in selecting a charity, attend Highline’s Professional Development Day on October 18th, the 10:30 a.m. session on “Building Communities through Giving”, six of the CFD charities will be doing presentations and have displays.
