Career & Employment Services Gets a Makeover

During the Summer Quarter, the upper lobby of building six went through a minor remodel.  As a result of this process, the Career Center and the Student Employment Center were finally able to truly merge as one after years of being separated by 10 yards (although it felt like 100).

This remodel has proved to be a great asset in the delivery of services to students and has increased visibility dramatically.  Since the start of Fall Quarter, student use is up 20%+ over same time last year.  Career & Employment Services provides a host of services to students and community members and has resources for Faculty as well.  Please drop by to check out our new location and inquire about our different services:

Career/Major Decision Making:  Inventories that correlate a student’s interests, personality and use of work-based skills to potential occupations and educational programs.

Career Exploration:  Information like average wages, job outlooks and required training are available in a number of different formats, books in our library, the Occupational Dictionary, O~Net and the Washington Occupational Information System.

Job Search Skills:  Students can receive individual assistance with resume writing and cover letters.  Every week there is a different workshop; click here to see this quarter’s topics. CES also has space dedicated for conducting video-mock interviews with students who wish to practice.

Job Search Assistance:  CES posts approximately 1500-2000 job announcements per quarter.  These are part-time and full-time, on-campus and off-campus jobs.  They are accessible as hardcopies, over the web and on a bulletin board in our office.  Please refer students to us if they have questions about employment, time-cards, Federal or State-Work Study.

Faculty:  You are welcome to check-out videos and books to be used in your class.  Staff are also available to facilitate class visits regarding resume writing, interview techniques and other topics.

Please call Erik Tingelstad at ext. 3599 with any questions.  Or email etingels@highline.edu.  You can also check out our department website for a more complete description of services, resources and hours of operation. http://www.highline.edu/stuserv/career/

Food Drive in 8th Year

The campus wide food drive to benefit the Des Moines Food Bank continues on campus through January.  Food barrels can be found in buildings 1, 6, 8, 9 16 and 25. So clean out your cupboards of non-perishable food and drop it off at one of the collection sites on campus.  They're also in need of clean paper and plastic grocery bags.
