President's
Message
by Priscilla J. Bell, President
Welcome
to the 2001-2002 academic year and the 40th Anniversary of
Highline Community College! This
year we will focus not just on the excellence of the educational program
but also on celebrating that excellence on campus and with the
community. The 40th
Anniversary Committee, co-chaired by Jeff Wagnitz, Jason Prenovost and
Gwen Spencer, have planned a wide variety of activities and events in
recognition of this special year. My
sincere appreciation goes to the entire committee for organizing our 40th
Anniversary celebration.
Of course, many additional initiatives are underway.
The strategic planning process should be complete, and the plan
adopted by the Board, in November.
Our self-study, in preparation for re-accreditation and in
conjunction with strategic planning and outcomes assessment, is in full
swing. A number of capital
projects are underway: completion
of building 30, completion of the tunnel project, design of the new
Highline/Central Washington University Higher Education Center, the new
childcare center design work, and design of the new student center.
This year we will also concentrate on strengthening relationships
with our public schools and community-based organizations, enhancing
staff recruitment and retention efforts, and broadening professional
development opportunities for all staff.
Plus, this year marks the beginning of Highline’s comprehensive
and strategic Institutional Advancement program.
So it should be a very full and very successful year!
I have no doubt that 2001-2002 will be an exciting
and rewarding year for us all, and I hope you join me in welcoming this
year with great enthusiasm and pride.

Welcome
back. It was an interesting
summer, dealing with earthquake-damaged facilities, FEMA, Building 30
Addition construction, and the new buildings. Most of our structures
fared the earthquake pretty well, but our Pier and underground utility
tunnels suffered enough damage to be closed by the City of Des Moines
until they are repaired. The
City was also nice enough to offer HCC the use of an empty Marina store
for our marine classes while we determined our course of action for the
Pier. The repair to the utility
tunnel began immediately, since they contained essential utilities;
natural gas, power and heating lines, as well as telephone and data
wiring. This major undertaking cut a very large trench through the
center of our campus (as well as many of the buried utilities).
Barring delays, the heat will be back on to all buildings by
mid-October. We hope to seed the soil before the monsoons hit, and
finish the landscaping work in the near future. (See a recent snapshot of the ongoing
tunnel project: photo.)
The
20,000 s.f. addition to Building 30 will create more computer stations,
classroom space and offices to accommodate our growing technology needs.
The contractor is working feverishly to complete this by early Spring.
The remodeled entrance will provide a warm welcome for our students,
faculty and staff. (See
a recent snapshot of the progress on the Building 30 Addition: photo.)
Lastly, we are in the architect selection phase for
three capital construction projects; the new Student Union building, the
new Childcare Center and the Higher Education Center, a partnership
project between Highline and Central Washington University. Design will
begin in the next few months and construction will likely start around
July, 2003. |
