Highline
Celebrates International Education Week Highline students, staff, and faculty celebrate International Education Week through workshops, music and dance, and shared conversations. Coordinated by Mariko Fujiwara, International Student Programs, James Peyton, Faculty Resource Center, and Kathleen Hasselblad, Instruction, the events spotlight the College’s outreach to the world and the global diversity of the campus. Dr. Priscilla Bell opened the festivities on November 13th and noted that the world truly does come to Highline through international students, students from the surrounding communities, as well as faculty and staff with cultural origins from around the globe. She then urged the campus to participate in the week’s events to share perspectives, enjoy our cultural diversity, and learn from the work of others. Activities include a cultural fashion show, faculty presentations on bringing the world into the classroom, a performance of classical dances of India, and a focus on study abroad. In addition, Highline international students will give presentations on education at home compared with what they have experienced here, while Multicultural Services will talk about the significant immigrant and refugee populations the College serves. Secretary of
State Colin Powell declared International Education Week and this is the
first year that Highline has participated in the nationwide observances.
Celebrating International Education Week is in keeping with the
college’s strategic initiative to cultivate a college climate that
values diversity and global perspectives. The weeklong set of events is part of a growing awareness of the need to focus national attention on the importance of a global education for all Americans, through overseas study and exposure to other cultures at home. _________________________________ Food
