Weekly Science Presentations for the General Public
by Eric Stavney
Exciting science lectures in the Science Seminar series are presented every Friday, except holidays, in Room 3-102 on the Highline Campus.  The one hour weekly lectures, running from 2:10-3:00 pm, are specially designed for the general public, as well as students, faculty, and staff who are interested in science and how it operates.  We have developed a loyal following of people from our community, including seniors and many non-science faculty and staff members at Highline.
In each lecture, an HCC faculty scientist makes a presentation on current or historical topics in biology, geology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, engineering, and mathematics. The seminars seek to address basic questions such as:  How is scientific evidence gathered?  How are data evaluated in an objective, scientific way?  Why is scientific inquiry so exciting? Why would a person want to become a scientist?
Topics are chosen to be of general interest.  Last year there were lectures on how the Egyptian pyramids were built, when Mt. Rainier will erupt, how sea slugs swim, who (or what) is blowing up the universe, and how birds navigate.  Audience members are strongly encouraged to ask questions and participate in any discussions during the seminars.
Everyone is welcome at any seminar.  One unit of college credit can be earned by signing up for Science Seminar as a class (General Science 190).  Credit for the course is based solely on attendance at the seminars.  Students already signed up for 12 or more credits pay no extra fees to add the course, as long as they don’t exceed 18 total credits.  Seniors can easily sign up for credit; total fees are about $25, which includes a parking permit.

Explore the excitement of scientific research and discovery with us every Friday afternoon!  For more information, contact the Science Seminar Coordinator, Eric Stavney, at (206) 878-3710 extension 3823 or by email at estavney@highline.edu.
