Veteran educator and Highline administrator, Bermingham, takes
the helm

College board of trustees has named Jack Bermingham, Ph.D.,
interim president of the college.

Science Seminars Winter 2007
Each Friday, 2:10–3:00 p.m., during the
quarter, a different faculty member or guest speaker will
present a topic in his or her specialty area concerning new
discoveries and innovations in science and technology. Seminars
are free to the public, but students can also enroll in the
series to earn credit.

Screening of Al Gore’s Oscar-nominated
documentary, An Inconvenient Truth
Highline Community College will be showing
two free screenings of Al Gore’s Oscar-nominated documentary, An
Inconvenient Truth, at 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday,
February 9, 2007. A post-film discussion will focus on what you
can do about global warming. A teach-in with invited speakers
on Friday, March 2 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Highline Community

Diamond Bash Softball Auction
The 7th annual auction takes place February
9 on HCC’s main campus, Building 8. With a silent auction that
opens 5 p.m. and a 7 p.m. dinner and live auction, the event
will raise funds for travel and equipment for the women’s
softball team. Last year Diamond Bash brought in $14,000 for the
Lady Thunderbirds. Items to be auctioned include trips to
Arizona and Cabo San Lucas.

Highline Fills HR Top Spot
Portillo named executive director for human resources
DES MOINES, Wash. — Cesar Portillo has
joined Highline Community College as the executive director for
human resources.
Portillo comes to Highline with 15 years of experience in
employee relations and policy/procedure development as well as
extensive knowledge of employment laws. He most recently served
as interim director of human resources at the University of

Bean returns to Highline as financial services director
DES MOINES, Wash. — Shirley Bean has joined
Highline Community College as financial services director.
Bean’s career in financial services began at
Highline in 1992 when she served as a fiscal technician. Most
recently, she was director of finance for the Pierce College

Highline
Board of Trustees Terminates President’s Contract
DES MOINES, Wash. — The Highline Community College
Board of Trustees announced today that it has terminated the contract of
college president, Dr. Priscilla Bell. Board chair, Dr. Elizabeth Chen,
indicated that the decision was based on philosophical differences.
“This was a very difficult decision for the Board,” she said, adding
that the Board appreciates Dr. Bell’s contributions to Highline these
past six years.
The Board has appointed Dr. Jack Bermingham
as Interim President. Dr. Bermingham has served as the Vice President
for Academic Affairs at Highline for the past 14 years. 11/16/06

Faculty Receives Outstanding Educator Award
The National
Communication Association chooses Barbara Clinton as recipient
DES MOINES, Wash. — The National Communication
Association (NCA) has chosen Highline Community College speech
communication professor Barbara Clinton as the 2006 Community College
Outstanding Educator. The award is given to faculty who demonstrate an
unparalleled commitment to higher education and an outstanding
contribution teaching at a community college. Clinton will travel to San
Antonio, Texas, for the awards ceremony November 18, 2006. The recipient
is presented with a plaque and a cash award from the Community College

VP Selected to Council for Resource Development Post
Skari
joins national board of directors
DES MOINES, Wash. — The Council for Resource
Development (CRD) selected Lisa Skari, vice president for institutional
advancement at Highline Community College, to join its national board of
directors. Skari was named director for CRD Region X during the national
meeting held recently in Washington, D.C.
CRD supports professionals and develops
leaders engaged in community college resource development through
education, advocacy and mentoring. CRD represents more than 800 two-year
colleges from across the United States, Canada, Bermuda, Puerto Rico and
the Virgin Islands and is divided into ten regions. Region X consists of
121 members from Alaska, Canada (British Columbia, Yukon Territories)
Idaho, Oregon and Washington. 11/13/06
