Highline Community College alum drafted by Major League Soccer team
Real Salt Lake picks midfielder Raphael Cox in fourth round
DES MOINES, Wash.
— Highline Community College alum Raphael Cox went to Real Salt Lake in the
Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft on Jan. 15.
Cox, a midfielder from Tacoma, Wash.,
helped lead the men’s soccer team at Highline to its first Northwest Athletic
Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) championship title in 2004. He was
also named to the NWAACC All-Star Team that year.
“Raphael came to Highline with the
hopes of playing soccer professionally,” said men’s soccer coach Jason
Prenovost.
“He had a strong work ethic, along
with great talent, and it doesn’t surprise me about his success,” Prenovost
said. “I look forward to following him throughout his playing career and beyond.”
Cox went to Salt Lake City’s MLS team in the fourth round
with the 54th overall pick.
Cox graduated from Tacoma’s
Stadium High School in 2004. After graduating
from Highline in 2006, he spent three seasons playing for the University of Washington.
Highline Community College
was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County.
With approximately 10,000 students and 350,000 alumni, it is one of the state’s
largest institutions of higher education. The college offers a wide range of academic
transfer and professional-technical education programs, with day, evening,
online and weekend classes.
With the most diverse population of
any college in Washington
state, Highline takes a multicultural approach to education for the success of
all its students and the prosperity of its surrounding communities. Alumni
include former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, entrepreneur Junki Yoshida and Washington state’s poet
laureate Sam Green.
