Highline’s Science Scholars Program names winter winners

 

DES MOINES, Wash. — Sixteen science, technology, engineering and math students at Highline Community College received up to $5,265 each from the college’s Science Scholars Program.

 

The scholarships, provided with funding from the National Science Foundation, help cover education costs for an academic year.

 

The scholarship winners for winter quarter, by city, are:

Des Moines                Michele Howard, Henok Kebede and Andrew Lawrence

Kent                            Tim Ha, Saher Hedayat, Si Nguyen and Urmila Patel

Renton                        Solomon Haile, Socheat Sum and George Vasquez

Seattle                         Lan Chau, Deborah Crow, Souleymane Dioubate, Anthony Petroff and LyHeng Touch

Tacoma                       Lori Jerome

 

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must qualify for financial aid, take at least 12 credits and have a 2.5 GPA or better. Students must be pursuing careers in astronomy, biology, biotechnology, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, geology, marine science, mathematics, oceanography or physics.

 

In September 2007, the National Science Foundation awarded Highline almost $600,000 to provide scholarships to students majoring in the pure and applied sciences.

Highline Community College was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County.
