Record Number to Attend College and Career Fair

Highline’s annual event brings dozens of colleges and companies to campus

DES MOINES, Wash. — Over 1,000 people are expected to explore career and education options during Highline Community College’s free event. The college’s annual Spring Festival is expected to draw a record number of participants in its eleventh year. More than 700 middle and high school students are planning to attend from surrounding school districts, including Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Tukwila and Fife.

The event is scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the college’s main campus. It is free and open to the public.

Using the college’s Pavilion (Building 28) as its headquarters, the festival will include a Career Fair with approximately 40 of the area’s top employers; a College Fair with more than 40 representatives from both in- and out-of-state four-year colleges and universities; approximately 20 representatives from Highline’s academic programs; a variety of career- and college-related workshops; sports activities; and live entertainment.

Highline invites colleges and employers to participate in the event free of charge, unlike other college and career fairs in the area. In choosing employers, Highline staff members match them with the college’s programs of study and encourage them to focus on careers, not jobs. A number of local businesses will be on hand, giving students the chance to learn about various industries and career opportunities. Some of the companies and organizations scheduled to participate include City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Fed Ex Ground, King County Elections, R.E.I., US Bank, Verizon Wireless, and YMCA Camp Coleman.

Highline Community College was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County. With approximately 9,500 students and 350,000 alumni, it is one of the state’s largest institutions of higher education. The college offers a wide range of academic transfer and professional-technical education programs, with day, evening, on-line, and weekend classes.

With the most diverse population of any college in Washington State, Highline takes a multi-cultural approach to education for the success of all its students and the prosperity of its surrounding communities. Alumni include former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice, entrepreneur Junki Yoshida and noted author Ann Rule.
