Marine Science & Technology (MaST) art show

Highline Community College’s Library Art Gallery show will feature the work of entrants in the MaST art contest throughout December.

The contest features the work of Highline art students in a variety of media, focusing on marine life and landscapes.

The contest celebrates the ongoing renovation of Highline’s Marine and Science Technology (MAST) center in the Redondo neighborhood of Des Moines.

The Marine Science & Technology (MaST) Center is the marine laboratory for Highline Community College. Located just four miles south of campus at Redondo Beach, the MaST Center is dedicated to expanding knowledge about the Puget Sound and the surrounding environment through teaching, learning, and research.  You may read more about MaST Center by visiting http://flightline.highline.edu/mast/.

Renovation of the center began this year.  The $2.6 million project will turn the MaST into a center of marine science education, featuring classrooms and one of the largest aquariums on Puget Sound.   Our brand new, 2,500 square-foot facility, due to reopen for Spring Quarter 2008, situated on a 260-foot pier over the Puget Sound, will offer public space, classroom, laboratories, and office and research areas. With more than 2,000 gallons of flow-through saltwater tanks, holding more than 80 species of local marine life and easy access to a huge diversity of nearby habitats, and state-of-the-art equipment, the center will offer enormous opportunity for research and education.

The contest is being sponsored by the MaST Center Capital Campaign and Daniel Smith Art Supply Store of Seattle.  Smith will award gift certificates to three of the contest winners.

The HCC Library Exhibits and Art Gallery, located on the fourth floor of the Library, is an area set aside for exhibiting visual arts. Our gallery displays the creative works of faculty, staff, students and members of the extended community in an effort to provide space for promoting their diverse talents.
