Highline Community College offers annual Summer Marine Science Camp

DES MOINES, Wash. —Students ages 11-13 can learn about ecology, geology, oceanography, marine biology and water quality at the Summer on the Sound Marine Science Camp.

Housed in Highline’s shiny new Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center, the camp will run July 14-18, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

"Students will have a chance to find out what it’s like to be a marine scientist; learn about taking care of Puget Sound and its surroundings; interact with a diver via live video camera; and more", says Chris Gan, Highline biology instructor and camp coordinator.

Best of all, the camp is free.  But it is limited to 25 students who will be selected on the basis of their application materials which include a short letter from the student and a letter of recommendation from a science teacher.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn about and explore our southern Puget Sound by getting their hands wet and dirty!” says Gan.  The MaST Center features one of the region’s largest aquariums following its multimillion-dollar renovation this spring.

Application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2008.   The application form is available at http://flightline.highline.edu/mast/SummerCamp.htm.

The Marine Science and Technology Center is at 28203 Redondo Beach Dr. S. in Des Moines.   The MaST Center is the marine laboratory for Highline Community College.  Located just four miles south of campus at Redondo Beach, the MaST Center is dedicated to expanding knowledge about the Puget Sound and the surrounding environment through teaching, learning, and research.  You may read more about MaST Center by visiting http://www.highline.edu/mast.
