Highline College Science Seminar returns for winter

 

            Highline Community College’s Science Seminar returns for winter with a full line-up of presentations on a variety of topics.

            Science Seminar is a free, open-to-the-public series of discussions about scientific topics from anthropology to zoology, from Bigfoot to the big bang.  The series features experts from the community as well as Highline faculty, many of whom are acknowledged experts in their fields. 

            Winter Quarter’s line-up includes:

 

            Jan. 11: The Fifth Annual Chemistry Show featuring Highline Chemistry Professor John Pfeffer doing a lot of really cool, exploding things with chemicals.  But don’t try this at home.

            Jan. 18: Astronomy, myths and gods, featuring Highline Physics Professor Igor Glozman.

            Jan. 25: Computer Forensics: No Dead Bodies Allowed, featuring Highline Computer Science Professor Amelia Phillips.

            Feb. 1:  Math as Art: the work of M.C. Escher, with Highline Mathematics Professor Ed Morris.

            Feb. 8: Providing humanitarian medical aid with non-profit Medical Teams, featuring Highline Nursing Professor Elise Muller-Lindgren, who has worked in refugee camps in Uganda.

            Feb. 15: Cryptography, featuring Kurt Geissel of Highline’s Administrative Technology Department.

            Feb. 22: Clean Energy Resources, featuring Puget Sound Early College Professor Ravi Manghani.

            Feb. 29: Predicting Earthquakes: A hands-on Science Seminar, with Highline Geology Professor Dr. Eric Baer.

           

            Science Seminar takes place every Friday at 2:20 p.m. in Building 3, room 102.  Science Seminar is available as a one-credit class, General Science 190, but everyone is welcome to attend.  You can watch many of the science seminars on-line at http://flightline.highline.edu/scienceseminars/getinvolved.html

 

Highline Community College was founded in 1961 as the first community college in King County. With approximately 9,500 students and 350,000 alumni, it is one of the state’s largest institutions of higher education.
