Getting started at Highline is easy. New students should follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Apply for Admission
Students who are 18 years or older and who will be attending Highline for the first time should complete a Highline application form. Applications may be submitted one of three ways:

First-Time Applicants: A one-time, nonrefundable fee is required to fully process your application.

High School Students: Refer to these specific programs for more information Running Start, High School Completion, GED, Puget Sound Early College

International Students: Refer to the “International Students” section for specific instructions.

Students Returning After Time Away (STRATA): Students who have attended Highline Community College in the past can reactivate their record. Refer to the “STRATA” section for specific information.

Transfer Students: Students who have attended other colleges and wish to enroll in credit-bearing classes at Highline for the first time should submit the following:

  • Highline Community College application form and nonrefundable fee;
  • Official transcripts from each college attended (only required for students seeking to complete a Highline degree or certificate program);
  • Highline Community College “Transcript Evaluation Request” form.

Step 2: Finance Your Education
All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid no later than the day they apply for college admission. See the " Financial Aid" section for specific information regarding the financial aid process at Highline Community College.

Admissions/Entry Services can also provide general information about arranging a payment plan (STEPP) operated by Highline Community College.

Step 3: Assess Your Skills
All applicants who are new to college studies and intend to earn academic credit are encouraged to take the ESL COMPASS or COMPASS assessment test. This basic skills test will be used for advising and registration purposes. Testing is available throughout the week. Call Admissions/Entry Services to find out about available testing times: (206) 878-3710, ext. 3406, or visit the Testing Center Web page at www.highline.edu/stuserv/testcenter.

Students who have completed some college coursework or have taken a placement test at other schools should contact Admissions/Entry Services  at (206) 878-3710, ext. 3181 or admissions@highline.edufor more information.

Step 4: Meet with an Adviser
By attending a College Orientation and Registration Experience (CORE)
session or meeting with an academic adviser, students can discuss their educational plans and be certain that the classes they are selecting will help meet educational and career goals. All new students are encouraged to
attend a CORE session. The Educational Planning and Advising Center (EPAC) in Building 6 offers advising on a drop-in basis to new students. For more information on EPAC, see " Advising and Educational Planning."

Step 5: Register for Classes
Registration (selecting classes) is based upon earned academic credits. New students register approximately one month prior to the start of an academic quarter. Information about registration is forwarded to students after they apply for college admission (Step 1 described above).

Step 6: Pay Tuition and Fees Tuition and fees will be assessed based upon the total number of academic credits students select. Tuition due dates and payment options are available in the the quarterly class schedule. For more information on fees, see the "Tuition and Fees" section.
