* General Information: Financial Aid

All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid. The financial aid
process takes time and requires planning. Students should review the information below to assure they take full advantage of financial assistance.

Applying for Financial Aid
Highline Community College publishes recommended dates by which students need to apply in order to be assured of receiving the financial aid award notification in time to pay tuition for a given quarter. These dates are listed at www.highline.edu/stuserv/financialaid/deadlines.htm. Students should start the application process at least 10 weeks before the deadline for the quarter that they plan to attend.

Highline recommends students begin the application process by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Applying over the Internet may speed up the processing time and will require less paperwork. High school students should complete the FAFSA in January of their senior year.

Paper copies of the FAFSA are also available in the Financial Aid office in Building 6.

  • State Programs: State Need Grant and State Work Study

Eligibility for Financial Aid
The Financial Aid office reviews applications to assure students meet
financial aid eligibility requirements. In some cases, students may be asked
to provide additional documents to this office. It is important that the Financial Aid office has a student’s most current contact information
(address or telephone number). The following are general guidelines regarding eligibility for financial aid:

  • Be a United States citizen or be a permanent resident of the United States;
  • Be, or have been, registered with selective service (men only, as required);
  • Be working toward a degree or approved certificate at Highline;
  • Have a high school diploma or GED certificate or demonstrate (through official testing) the ability to benefit; and
  • Pay in full any repayment owed for a federal grant and have made all payments due on federal educational loans.

Academic Requirements for Financial Aid
Students receiving financial aid are expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Academic progress is based on the number of credits completed and cumulative grade point average. Here are the minimum credits students must complete each quarter:
  • Full-time: (12 or more credits);
  • Three-quarter-time: (9–11 credits);
  • Half-time: (6–8 credits).

A minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average is required of all financial aid recipients.

Copies of the complete Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy |for Highline Community College are available upon request in the Financial
Aid office or online at www.highline.edu/stuserv/financialaid/pdfs/academ_progress_policy.pdf.

Student Loan Deferments
Highline Community College reports enrollment electronically to the National Student Clearinghouse, which in turn reports to lenders and guarantors throughout the country. This report serves as a virtual deferment form and is run several times each quarter.

Students wishing to have a paper version of the deferment form processed should contact the Registration office in Building 6 and submit a stamped,
self-addressed envelope with a deferment form from their lender. Highline Community College recommends students check with their lender or previous colleges to determine if half-time or full-time enrollment is required to defer
a loan. Students must be enrolled for at least six credits for half-time attendance and 12 credits for full-time attendance.

Student Employment
Many students qualify to work in one of the many departments or offices on the Highline campus. In addition, Highline also offers resources for off-campus employment. More information about these opportunities is available in the Financial Aid office and the Student Employment office in Building 6.

Tax Credit
Under the HOPE tax credit, eligible students pursuing the first two years of postsecondary education may receive a tax credit.

The taxpayer or student can claim a credit for his or her own tuition expense or for the expenses of his or her spouse or dependent children. Since the tax credit is restricted based on income levels, participants should contact their tax preparer for tax advice.

Visit www.nasfaa.org/AnnualPubs/TaxBenefitsGuide.html or contact the Cashier office in Building 6 for more information about this important tax benefit.

Scholarships and Energy Assistance
The Highline Community College Foundation provides financial assistance to students through a scholarship program and Emergency Assistance funds. These funds are made available through donations from community organizations, corporations, and individuals.

The scholarships have a wide range of qualifications. Not all of them are
based on demonstrating financial need or a 4.0 grade point average. Some are based on area of study, household demands, or future education plans.

For more information, contact either the Financial Aid office in Building 6 at (206) 878-3710, ext. 3358, or the Foundation office in Building 99 at (206) 878-3710, ext. 3774.

Prof-Tech Program-specific scholarships may be available through other sources. See "Scholarships" entry under individual programs.
