DESCRIPTION
The Marine Science & Technology (MaST) Center Laboratory
Technician reports to the Chair of the Pure and Applied Science
Division and is supervised by the Manager of the day to day
operation of the MaST Center. The Laboratory Technician’s
responsibilities will focus on the running of the MaST aquariums,
including life support, maintenance of the plumbing systems, animal
husbandry and providing coverage when the manager is away from the
center.
DUTIES:
-
Maintain a safe visitor environment at the
MaST Center;
-
Feed and care for aquarium specimens,
medicate animals according to established procedures and
specific instructions, and maintain related records;
-
Perform maintenance of exhibits and
systems including cleaning display tanks, repairing exhibits,
and set up or dismantling of exhibits;
-
Assist in animal acquisition, field trip
collecting, laboratory activities, record maintenance data;
-
Act as exhibit interpreter in informal
settings;
-
Supervise volunteers/docents of various
ages and abilities;
-
Set up and maintain laboratory;
-
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Must be able to work with minimal
supervision, possess organizational skills, be self-motivated,
and able to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
-
Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and
team-building skills;
-
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to
work outdoors, on wet and slippery surfaces, and at heights;
-
Must have or be able to obtain a
Washington State Driver License.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
-
SCUBA certification, provide own gear;
employment will not be offered until a check-out dive is
successfully completed.

Two years of college-level courses in
biology, oceanography or a related field;
-
The equivalent of six months’ full time
work experience in aquatic animal care and aquarium systems
maintenance;
-
A clear understanding of fish and
invertebrate biology and technical knowledge of marine biology,
water quality analysis, aquatic life support systems and marine
animal health;
-
An understanding of the need for the
conservation of our marine environment;
-
Marine animal collecting experience;
-
Experience working in informal education.
