Job Title: Senior Instructional Designer

Review your Position Context.

What changes have occurred over the last 18 months that might change this?

There have been no significant changes to the environment that will impact the position context. However, enrollment difficulties have placed an emphasis on Hybrid and Online courses. Increased interest among the faculty in the use of new technologies, a focus on assessment, and meeting the needs of “Net Generation” students has resulted in an increased research workload.

Changes in the funding structure of the Faculty Resource Center have required more active involvement in FRC steering activities.

Also, the continued absence of the Instructional Technology Trainer and partial replacement by Faculty in Residence has reduced the department’s capacity to meet the needs of faculty.

Review your Core Functions and Duties.

What (if any) changes have been made over the last 18 months?
The staffing listed in Instructional Design Coordination and Leadership should be changed to reflect the vacant position, and the addition of the faculty in residence. Participation in state-wide and local committees should be updated to remove the Working Connections and EAPAS examples; these can be replaced by Distance Learning Council and The Washington BlackBoard Users Group (WABUG).

What areas will need more focus in the next 18 months?
Though not officially Highline’s DLC representative, I’ve been attending the meetings in J.W.’s stead. This has led to involvement in the state-wide Blackboard licensing negotiations as well as other related activities.

A bullet indicating increased involvement in hybrid and distance learning would be appropriate. “Advise and support college activities in hybrid and distance learning, including liaison with distance learning and instructional design colleagues at other institutions.”

Review your Current Position Goals.

What goals have been accomplished?
Transitioning management of the Public Web Presence was completed in December, 2005. Release time is now being transitioned back to all areas of job description.

Blackboard upgrade to version 6 was completed in January, 2005; subsequent efforts have focused on continued upgrades (now at 6.3.1.505) and transitioning to Blackboard Enterprise.

No work has been done on transitioning to a new instructional department. This is expected to be accomplished Fall 2006.

Continued re-invention of the Instructional Design department is in progress, and has included deeper involvement in pedagogy discussions with faculty, adjustments to the new staffing strategy, and more proactive research in new technologies.

Do any new goals need to be added?
Not at this time.

Review your Development Initiatives.

What initiatives have been accomplished?
Both initiatives have been partially completed. For Initiative 1, I taught a web development class in winter 2004. Progress on implementing database technologies on the web at Highline has occurred, though I have not been involved in either managing or programming those tools. I have been able to keep up on knowledge about capabilities and techniques for web development. On several tools, I was called on to either determine or consult on business processes.

Activities described in Initiative 2 have been my primary focus since the Public Web Coordinator position was transitioned to another employee. I’ve been researching podcasting, social networking sites, and other tools for use in teaching and learning. This has resulted in conference presentations in spring 2006, as well as involvement in videogames course as auditor and colleague. In addition, I’m involved in both the Hybrid and the Distance ed committees, which have been very active during the 05-06 school year.

Do any new initiatives need to be added?
Not at this time.

Review the data you’ve been gathering to evaluate your Measures of Success.

Do any changes need to be made to your data-gathering process?
Measures of success for Initiative 1 are adequate, in large part because they are very discrete and tangible.

For initiative 2, the measures are more difficult to quantify. Current adoption levels in Blackboard are certainly a worthwhile measure to assess campus-wide impact for that system. In addition, presentation of the science seminar, growing interest in podcasting, and conference presentations on new technology and the challenges of teaching millennial students are tangible achievements.

Summarize any changes that need to be made in the resources available or in activities in your work that will support achieving your goals and accomplishing your Development Initiatives:

The increased interest in hybrid and online classes, coupled with the reduced staffing, have maxed out the department’s capacity. Additional projects, or another significant increase in interest in hybrid and distance learning will further challenge that. I’ve also been helping more with Blackboard and web admin tasks, due to the heavy workload in Instructional Computing.

Involvement in numerous state-wide and campus initiatives, as well as a heavier than usual travel schedule have taxed my ability to maintain a regular telecommute schedule. The telecommute day is key to maintaining space for research and reading.

Naturally, additional full time staffing would be the best way to improve the situation. Given the current budget situation, continued understanding in the face of shelved projects will be necessary. Additionally, project grants to develop new hybrid and online classes should include funding to offset shifting of work within Instructional Design to other part-time staff, releasing ID staff from teaching responsibilities, and providing support for Media Services and IC server and programming staff.
