Job Title: Senior Instructional Designer

The Senior Instructional Designer reports to the Dean of Instructional Resources. The Senior Instructional Designer leads a department providing support for faculty and instructional staff wishing to redesign and/or enhance instructional offerings. The department provides one-on-one, small group, and large group assistance to faculty working on such projects. The Department works in partnership with the Faculty Resource Center and other Instructional Resources departments, as well as Administrative Technology, to facilitate faculty use of technology in teaching.

The Instructional Design department is part of Instructional Resources, which includes instructional computing support (classrooms and labs), instructional design assistance, support for the delivery of computing resources to the classroom, multimedia production, and library and media materials/services. This position will require occasional travel to meet with college partners and represent Highline at regional, national, or international conferences.

Instructional Design Coordination (10%)

  • Coordinate activities of the Instructional Design department, including administrative needs and activities of the staff (currently 1 Associate Instructional Designer, 1 Instructional Technology Trainer)

  • Participate in Instructional Technology Team and other leadership bodies as necessary to support department goals


Instructional Design (40%)

  • Assist faculty to integrate technology into instruction based on sound pedagogical technique, instructional strategies, and instructional philosophies;

  • Conduct faculty and professional staff workshops on such topics as educational technology, distance learning strategies, learning theories, and student support mechanisms;

  • Provide instructional design and technical consulting to faculty;

  • Produce course materials as a member of a production team which may include instructional technology staff, faculty, or administrators;

  • Provide faculty development for integration of technology with instruction, including WWW, multimedia, interactive video and electronic mail;

  • Collaborate with faculty to design appropriate instructional strategies, to redesign courses, and to create appropriate assessments for curricula

  • Collaborate with instructional staff to incorporate alternative delivery methods into the routines of the college

 

Direct Instruction Web Site Coordination (15%)

  • Develop or direct the development of initial pages or portal to that web presence

  • Convene the working committee for that presence

  • Deal with reports/concerns about unity on that presence

  • Guide discussion about web guidelines and activities

  • Co-chair campus wide web steering committee


Instruction (25%)

  • Teach 10 - 15 credits per year over four quarters. Instructional responsibilities include office hours, student advising and participation in department planning.

  • Participate in campus planning and curriculum development for multimedia, e-commerce, and computing related programs


Campus Community (5%)

  • Participate in Faculty Resource Center and Instructional Resources planning and committee activities, participate in campus-wide activities, and serve on campus committees.


Professional Development (5%)

  • Actively participate in continuing education and professional activities to maintain and upgrade knowledge and technique.


2002-2005 Goals

  • Using existing 40% release time from above duties, continue to develop campus web activities and strengthen unity of the college’s public and direct instruction web presences

  • Learn the content for and teach the second year Web Design courses for IMP

  • Complete rollout of BlackBoard course management system, per the project outcomes

  • Complete the development and roll-out of a Performance Appraisal System for exempt and administrative staff
